15 SIGNS YOU MAY NOT BE READY FOR LONG-TERM BUDGET TRAVEL

1/6/2016

Don't be fool enough to think you can know a person's character after a few moments of observation. You can't. You have no idea where his life began or how his saga has unfolded thus far. Only his present state can you witness. To judge him at a glance is like reading one page in an open book, believing it's enough to confidently recite the story from beginning to end. True, one page may tell you much, but not nearly enough to accurately critique a book or evaluate a life. So, either become his friend and learn his entire story, or refrain from commenting on a tale you know nothing about. – Richelle E. Goodrich

Wednesday, January 6, 2016 (DAY 1,401)
After nearly four-years of continuous budget travel, I feel that I can confidently say that I have moved into the category of a veteran long-term backpacker that has learned many tricks to budget travel and visit some of the most expensive places in the world to living comfortably and happy in Third World conditions. I know what it's like to live without running water for days, going without electricity for more than a week, and passing through the most notorious city, San Pedro Sula in Honduras that was dubbed 'The Murder Capital of the World' back in 2012 having more murders per capita than any other recorded city on the globe. I've lived in every country in Latin or Central America, where according to Business Insider, it has been listed as having more murders per than any other region in the world. I still doubt this fact with what has been going on throughout areas in Syria, Ukraine, and the continent of Africa where statistical data may be unavailable, however, this doesn't detour from the fact that Central America is one of my favorite regions, but it is and can be extremely dangerous.

The reason I chose to write about this particular travel topic is because throughout the past 1,401 days, I have had several friends ask me numerous questions about how I've been able to achieve this lifestyle when I'm not independently wealthy, living on a trust fund, or have had constant financial donations. I tell them, that I've learned to become more adaptable including regaining more of my entrepreneurial spirit starting a businesses in Nicaragua and another two in South Korea that has allowed me to continue to fund this incredible adventure.

I've also taken on jobs that many may consider would be beneath themselves, especially after leaving behind a 12-year career on an executive level in broadcast television as a Program Manager for HDNet, which is now AXStv. People are often surprised to hear that I worked for Mark Cuban—yes, that Mark Cuban the eccentric billionaire, NBA Dallas Mavericks owner, Shark Tank investor, etc and etc—but I've learned a great deal of humility and innovation to maintain a lifestyle that carries both an excess of freedoms and an excess of hard work from time to time. I've worked as several times as a hostel manager, volunteer guest house staff, commercial fisherman, freelance consultant, broadcast technical manager, translation coordinator, English teacher, and the less glorious times I've had to clean bathrooms, do fiberglass work, and various manual labor jobs. But, through all of this I've learned and gained a plethora of new skills and exponentially developed my previous or current skills.

=================================

I apologize for several blogs being *A WORK IN PROGRESS* but Weebly, the free website building tool I use often does not save my draft blogs correctly—for example today I spent almost an hour working on a blog and thought it published only to find out that not only did it NOT PUBLISH but it also deleted ALL of my work! So, until this issue is resolved there will be sparsely published blogs from time to time...

Just another reason back in 2011, I wish I would have gone with Wordpress over Weebly, but at that time both had advantages and disadvantages and I chose Weebly because I knew starting my travels in Central America Wifi would most likely be limited and I was also traveling with a small Dell netbook and wasn't sure how the coding aspect would work out on a small device that was hacked to run Mac OS instead of Windows.

While, I continue to tell people not to be so fearful of the idea and that they, themselves, CAN achieve long-term budget travel as a backpacker, I will have to admit very tenaciously and staunchly that this lifestyle is NOT for everyone. Therefore, if you feel that any of these suggested 15 signs are too extreme or difficult for you then my advice for you and for anyone else is that you are NOT ready for long-term budget travel. All too often people think the backpacker lifestyle is so carefree and wonderful without any worries or problems, but when they truly hit that wall of the 'unglamorous side of travel,' which I am planning to write a specific blog about soon, they often want to point fingers and blame others. This happened very recently to myself, as I met another short term American traveler, and later she decided that she wanted to quit her job and try living the lifestyle of a backpacker. I went to great lengths of helping her with her packing list, numerous conversations of advice, and even went as far as meeting her in South East Asia for a month to be her so-called training wheels. Well, let me tell you this was one of the worst experiences and situations as she had three separate nervous breakdowns crying uncontrollably, complaining constantly, and fearful of even crossing the border overland to Thailand. I swore that I will NEVER again help another newbie in this same fashion. I had a lot of wonderful assistance and advice from my travel mentor, Jeff Schenker, but I never expected him to meet me in my first country of Belize when I set out on my solo backpacker journey and had to figure out much for myself. I feel that for those that are seeking to quit their jobs and sell most of their possessions should have to experience it the same way, otherwise, YOU MAY NOT BE READY FOR LONG-TERM BUDGET TRAVEL! So without further here's the list...
1. KEEPING ONE FOOT IN EACH PLACE
You cannot expect to experience travel abroad when you are constantly connected to friends and family on a daily basis for hours at a time. Once again I'm going to continuously reference this previous individual that I will continue to keep anonymous as an example. This person would begin the morning talking via Skype or Facebook with family and/or friends typically until 12pm or 1pm in the afternoon and then finally be ready to go out and explore this new country, and then later complain about where the day went. Yes, this happened pretty much EVERY SINGLE MORNING! Part of travel on any level is living in the moment and experiencing where you are, NOT trying to keep tabs on meaningless things back at home. "So, what are you doing this weekend? What did you do yesterday?" Does that really have any bearing whatsoever to being halfway around the world? LIVE IN THE MOMENT! If its that necessary for you to follow everyone on social media as you would back at home, then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.
Picture
2. USING TRAVEL TO MAKE PEOPLE BACK HOME ENVIOUS
If you think that quitting your job and selling your things to brag about all the cool places you are going to visit and then taking selfies and photos just to brag and make others envious is a large part of your long-term travel plan, if not the primary reason you are doing this, then you'll quickly learn that surprise, surprise people will stop caring because they have their own lives to lead and then eventually those strong friendships start becoming more distant and then you are all alone. Feeding on the acceptance and envy of others is a poor and honestly sad way to live life. Live life for the strengths that make you, YOU! If this seems to be an impossible task or you are unable to break free from time to time of social media trolling, then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

3. UNWILLINGNESS TO ADAPT
I understand that adapting at the beginning of any journey or adjusting to a new country or region is not always the easiest, but there is a big difference in taking time to adapt and flat out refusing to adapt. For example, if you're going to be a budget traveler–not even long-term–and you are going to have to use local transportation unless you want to pay premium costs for taxis, especially for long distances, you must realize that these methods of transportation can be uncomfortable, stuffy, smelly, etc. When this friend and I boarded a local bus and the windows didn't open and the AC was nonexistent even though it was advertised as having air-conditioning, she threw a fit complaining loudly and openly causing a great deal of embarrassment and just a high-level of disrespect because the other locals have no other choice but to use this local transportation because this is a Third World country! Not even 15-minutes into the seven-hour journey and she was begging to persuade me to ask the driver to stop and flag down a taxi. I told her that we wouldn't receive a refund for the $7 or $10 we paid for the bus, and since I've been to this country several times and knew the prices, I told her that a taxi would cost a minimum of $50. I told her to see about waiting it out until we at least reach the half-way point where we will stop for a break to get food and have a chance to use a archaic bathroom. She agreed and eventually stuck out the entire bus ride, but once again constant complaining throughout the bus ride, complaining about the lack of no doors or toilet paper or even Western toilets but holes in the ground aka squater toilets, and how the food options didn't seem to be very good or to her standard. So I began to tune her out and enjoyed my very nice local cuisine lunch for a few dollars knowing that we still had roughly four hours on this journey and that I was financially supporting a local families restaurant instead of complaining the entire time. If you can't adapt to these conditions whether they be transportation, food, accommodation, sanitary conditions, etc, then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

4. UNABLE TO BUDGET BEFORE TRAVELING
I feel that this is one of the most important aspects, if not THE MOST IMPORTANT aspect of being a long-term budget traveler because if you are unable to stick to a budget or you make impulsive purchases when you have a job and a steady income, how on earth do you expect to do this when you have no income coming in only the constant depletion of your bank account as it dwindles down. You must master this aspect FIRST AND FOREMOST, otherwise you'll be returning home penniless much sooner than expected with a whole new set of struggles and concerns. Once again if you are incapable of strictly maintaining AND monitoring your own personal finances, then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

5. COMMUNAL LIVING
Not only is this the cheapest option generally for long-term budget travel, it is also the way that you are going to socially connect with others traveling on a budget whether long-term or not, and sacrifices need to be made. Once again this friend that I traveled with felt that it was an ABSOLUTE necessity to get good rest each night and refused to stay in dorms, which to me was quite funny because we met at a hostel where granted she shared a private room with a friend and then later were reunited staying in a four-bed mixed dorm with two other strangers and a good night's sleep never seemed to be an issue. Once again being a backpacker doesn't mean you ALWAYS have to stay at hostels because it's a well known fact that throughout South East Asia and other areas around the world it may be cheaper to share a private room than individually pay for a dorm at a hostel. This was the case as we traveled together, however, when I left her she was paying nearly double the price of a hostel being alone instead of choosing to save money and stay at a hostel in the dorms. If you can't adjust to communal living, then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

6. WHOA TO ME AND MY BUDGET
I think one of the biggest annoyances TRUE budget travelers have is when we meet other so-called backpackers or budget travelers that complain about their budget when later it comes out that they have parents or benefactors continually funding their travels. SERIOUSLY, stop pretending that you are a poor budget traveler when you are constantly receiving money from your parents and/or a benefactor. Sorry you are NOT in the same boat as the rest of us, but in fact I feel you are taking advantage of the kindness of others that truly are living on a budget and willing to share their money by paying for things for you. It reminds me of those girls that purposely go to bars and later brag about how many free drinks they got from guys. If you are going to act this way, eventually you're going to get chewed out, ostracized, or both and this certainly warrants for you to just STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY, or at the very least shut your yapper about crying about money, especially when you are making senseless purchases. Once again, an example of this individual, she arrived in East Asia and had perfectly fine tennis shoes (sneakers or runners for those non-American readers haha) and she felt that is was absolutely necessary to purchase boots, which in realty where high-top stylish shoes for nearly $55 while at the same time treating the local store merchants horribly by constantly being THAT demanding rude American tourist! Let me say it again, if you are going to act like a complete d-bag, then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.
Picture
7. INCAPABLE OF DOING YOUR OWN RESEARCH
As backpackers we rely on communicating with others to get the latest prices, advice, and other pertinent information, however, the big difference is when people expect YOU, veteran long-term budget travelers, to do all of their research for them and when it doesn't meet THEIR standard they want to blame you instead of pointing that sassy little finger back in the opposite direction where it belongs. This is one of the most important aspects of both saving money and learning life skills. If you can't even do basic research, then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

8. YOU HAVE MAJOR HYGIENE ISSUES
This goes right up there with complaining, communal living, failing to adapt, etc. If you think that hygiene and sanitation conditions are high on your list due to fears or concerns, that's completely understandable. Travel to more First World countries or regions. But, if you are going to explore more of the remote areas where your money will go much farther then expect that the conditions will be of a much lower standard then you may be used to. As the old saying goes, you can't have your cake and eat it too! UNLESS you have started to learn the various loop holes in the system. For example, I'm living in a First World country at the moment that is in the top 15 of GDP's in the World and the 13th most expensive city to live in the world, yet I am able to do so because I live in a guest house and keep my monthly living expenses to roughly $450 a month including accommodation, transportation, eating and going out on occasion, and entertainment budget, all while running two of my own businesses and saving nearly 88% of my income. So once again, there are uncanny exceptions, you just have to learn these over time. If you come down with hygiene issues that begin to affect your health that's understandable, but when you have issues due to smells or communal showers in hostels, then my advice..STAY AT A HOTEL AND WATCH YOUR BUDGET DWINDLE OR STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

9. YOU NEED SPECIFIC COMFORTS BUT CAN'T AFFORD THEM
Once again if infinity pools, four or five-star accommodations, luxurious modes of transportation, or you have a perpetual YOLO attitude and cannot say, "no," to things because you just have to do them since you are there even though your budget doesn't allow for it or you haven't done your proper research to realize, hey I can get my PADI certification if I just go to the neighboring country and get it for a fraction at the price, then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY. I am not saying that we all can't use a time to splurge, even for long-term budget travelers, but one again there are these amazing loopholes that can be utilized. For example, when I went from Thailand to Bali I made sure to arrive just a few days after high season in January after all of the Aussies rang in the new year and were heading back down under, and while I was recovering from food poisoning and needing to run to the toilet often throughout the night I wanted to be respectful of other guests in the dorms so I purposely asked hostels about private room costs and once I realized they were unwilling to negotiate on the price I took some time and wandered around Bali inquiring at hotels and eventually I negotiated a three-star hotel from $40 a night down to $20 a night! 10. YOU REFUSE TO CHANGE YOUR MENTAL PERCEPTION
We all understand and realize sleep, eating regularly, and other aspects make up an overall healthy lifestyle, however, when you take on the lifestyle of long-term traveler you must realize that feeling as though you NEED to continue to maintain a specific type of schedule, this will NEVER work. Your body and yourself will adjust to your new surroundings and environments. For example, when I got to Cusco, Peru people didn't go out until at the earliest 1am! And throughout Asia, it is such a night life culture that most great restaurants don't even open until 5pm or 6pm and some of the most interesting shopping areas begin around 11pm or midnight! This is also true about the mornings, where many coffee shops in Seoul don't open until 11am! You will be surprised at how well your body adjusts and forcing it to do so will only cause you and others around you more stress and you will eventually find yourself alone because no one wants to be around a negative Nancy that is always complaining about everything including situations that they CAN and CANNOT control! If this is too difficult for you because you expect EVERYONE else, both locals and other travelers alike to adjust to meet your needs princess then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

11. THIS IS A LIFESTYLE, NOT A VACATION
If your mentality going in to long-term travel is that this is going to be an awesome long-term extended vacation then you are WAYYYY wrong friend! Stop treating this as an extended vacation because it's NOT! There are plenty of hardships and difficulties. You will experience loneliness like you have never imagined. You may find out what it's like to live without running water or electricity for a few days. You will know hunger because even though you may have money to purchase food, you will find that there aren't 24-hour places to eat all the time. You will experience complete exhaustion from snoring monsters, noise parades, party hostels that you didn't expect to be blaring music all night long, and many other interruptions that you may or may not be prepared to handle. You will also be forced to deal with limited technology issues and MANY other situations. I've learned that you can either get really pissed and be angry at people or circumstances that you cannot control or you can learn to roll with the punches, because that's what life in general often is and if you think you can't deal with this then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

12. STOP WITH THE NEED TO OVER-PLAN EVERY DETAIL
Once again, if you can't roll with what life throws at you and you have the constant need to try and control every situation and blame others when things don't fit YOUR mold, then stay within the confines of your small part of the world that makes you feel safe and comfortable by taking the advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

13. REFUSING TO TAKE ADVICE
Refusing to listen and take the advice from other travelers, especially those that have been successful long-term budget travelers by blatantly ignoring their advice is a sure-fire way for you to fail from the beginning. Once again this friend that I tried to help with numerous levels of advice, including having a surprise long layover in their city where we had a chance to meet up in person before she set out on her travels and I even walked her through REI to show her the items that she would need to purchase at a premium cost for higher quality and items that she could go cheap on or completely discard, later, I realized that she took about 10% of my advice and when we met up halfway around the world she complained to me that I didn't tell her about certain items, when I most certainly did. Later, it came out that she was more concerned with throwing herself nearly five different going away parties and bragged constantly to me and other travelers we met about how many people came to her parties and how many great connections she has back in the States. Surprise, backpackers DON'T CARE about your superficial ego! When she should have been planning and preparing to leave behind one area of her life to take on an entirely new and different lifestyle, it was more of a priority to feel loved and missed. I know that as I use this person as an example, I am NEVER trying to imply that I am better by any means, I'm just trying to give the cold hard facts about what long-term budget travel is truly like, and this person just happens to encompass many aspects of the negative side and abilities of why she was and is not ready for long-term budget travel even though she has a so-called boyfriend that sadly she just uses for his great big generous heart and open-wallet to feed her lack of planning and preparation. Even as she has left and been on her own, she blindly and ignorantly took advice from talking to OTHER travelers that told her false information such as, "oh, you can get a certain type of visa and pay for an extension, which is cheap and easy." Well, she later realized that the tourist visa for Cambodia is $30 while she paid $35 for this other type of visa both for 30-days and later found out that the visa extension would be an additional $55. I told her the best way to save money, because again she was complaining to me about receiving false information instead of doing her own research or listening to myself by blaming anyone else other than herself about this large disparity in costs, and I told her that since she's going to be in Siem Reap that her best decision to save money would be to just cross the border-overland to Thailand and re-enter paying the $30 tourist visa. Her response was that she was too afraid to do this border crossing alone and later met a guy that offered to pay for a round trip flight to Bangkok from Siem Reap where he had booked a hotel and would also pay for her re-entry visa to Cambodia since her flight was leaving from there to go to East Asia. She still denies that she was "too afraid" to cross the border overland even though she told several people this fact. One thing I know for certain is the tangled-web of lies WILL eventually catch up to those, and one quote I think speaks volumes is, "if you tell the truth, it becomes a part of your past. If you life, it becomes a part of your future." Therefore, even though I've been living this lifestyle for nearly four-years, I still continually stop and listening to those that have been traveling long-term and those that haven't because advice can come in all forms, but refusing to accept it because you are arrogant will just land you in a world of hurt, so if you want to continue to do so or you feel you are 'set in your ways' then my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

14. COMPLAINING, COMPLAINING, MORE COMPLAINING & DISRESPECT
Pretty simple right? Once again this friend met another American traveler and complained to me that he was the epitome of the stereotypical 'annoying arrogant American tourist,' yet she never once saw herself as the same as she constantly complained, made very loud insults about food, smells, customs, etc by disrespecting entire cultures and not becoming BUT BEING that very annoying arrogant loud rude American tourist without realizing it, because several of us came to the conclusion that her tattooed motto should read 'BLAH KNOWS BEST AND EVERYONE ELSE IS WRONG.' Great attitude there, because you are just helping to perpetuate the stereotype of an ignorant American tourist that doesn't understand respect as she would make comments, like this is gross and why can't they speak English better! Sorry, you're a visitor in a foreign country and once again international travel is a privilege NOT a right and my advice...STAY BACK IN THE UNITED STATES OR YOUR HOME COUNTRY.

15. AFRAID TO GO HOME
When you have realized you've burned bridges and that you cannot stick to a budget even when you have a benefactor and all you do is complain and blame others. Seriously, it's time to go home and your fear of doing so because you bragged too much, threw too many self-pride parties in successful attempts to create envy from others, and now you are too humiliated to return home. You have to suck up your pride and head back, because eventually all those generous people that were willing to help you out that you took advantage of and eventually woke up to this realization and are no longer there to give you that helping hand, humbleness will take on an entirely new meaning for you! JUST GO HOME ALREADY!
Picture

In conclusion, those that are contemplating quitting their jobs, selling their possessions, and possibly running away to avoid facing life's issues by using long-term travel as an escape should know that these are much larger deep seeded issues that need to be addressed first. If anyone has taken the time to talk to me in person or read through my numerous blogs that I've tried to keep up on for more than four-years will understand that I LOVED my life back in Colorado. I had an amazing career that I enjoyed going to each day, I had a spacious home that I bought when I was 20-years-old, the best friends a guy could ask for, my family nearby, and many other things in life where I wasn't unhappy nor did I wake up and make this brash decision to leave suddenly. No! I spent nearly a year planning and organizing all of the necessary things to close out my life in Colorado, including giving my company four-months notice and spending as much time with family and close friends before leaving. I was very realistic of the hardships I would endure and I think that's one of the largest aspects is the mental difficulties you will deal with by setting out solo as a long-term budget traveler. So, I implore all of the would-be long-term travelers to maybe first try out two or three week solo backpacking trips abroad to see about how you may or MAY NOT feel that this is a lifestyle choice that fits you.

HONESTLY, NOT AN UNEXPECTED MESSAGE FROM THE UNNAMED TRAVELER AND MY REBUTTAL

Picture
Wow! Well, where to begin?! First of all, I find it ironic that this individual that I keep anonymous because I don't feel that it's fair to try and cause any animosity towards another person that was not directly involved in this situation, but I feel it necessary when someone calls me a LIAR, especially when they begin by stating that they felt "betrayed and abandoned" and then going even further stating that I was "embellishing" for the sake of my blog! REALLY?! This is how a person begins a message wanting assistance and help, by insulting me through SLANDEROUS statements? I have several friends that met this person and they were present for several of the occasions, thus there is NO EMBELLISHING, but this person has clearly quickly forgotten about the way she treated plenty of others negatively. Furthermore, it's fairly easy to travel for a year when SOMEONE ELSE is paying for your travels!

Let's set the record straight! First of all, I took the time to meet this person in SE Asia where I purposely arrived a day before just so that they would feel more comfortable flying from the US halfway around the world and I slept on a table outside the airport since this person was arriving in the morning. Second, this person has clearly forgotten that they had three separate nervous breakdowns in the month I tried assisting them in adjusting to long-term budget travel. And finally, I suggested that coming to Korea, because it could be an opportunity to be in a first world country and possibly substitute English tutoring from an American friend that was going back to the US for Thanksgiving and Christmas, HOWEVER, I clearly told this person that there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO GUARANTEE that she would be able to fill in tutoring the children that my friend had been working with, because the final decision was up to the parents if they wanted to bring in, basically a complete stranger into their homes and into their children's lives. I told this person that they should not bank on the fact that these paying gigs would be guaranteed and that she should begin posting for English teaching, but this was IGNORED! Then of course when she arrived in Seoul, mainly because she wanted to be here for Halloween to party! Once the parents started to state that they did not want to have a substitute tutor, this made her lash out at me by blaming me saying that I had, "coerced and tricked her into coming to Korea with promise of paid work!" Really?

I am not so proud to admit a possible mistake, as I did call her so-called boyfriend that was her financier benefactor and wanted to talk to him as a man and as her friend with concern that I was unsure she was ready to handle the long-term travel aspects from what I had personally witnessed and that she may be needing more financial help staying in one of the world's more expensive cities without much of an income. I did this NOT to be malicious by any means and I told both her and her so-called boyfriend the same, but I did it out of concern as a friend. I even talked with a few friends that had met her before making this call, because I was torn between what to do, and I genuinely felt that because she could not stick to a budget she was just spending her so-called boyfriend's money with no regard for budgeting and to me this was taking advantage of the kindness of someone that seems to have a very wonderful and generous heart!

Later, she began harassing my friend with messages that escalated to the point of bullying her to get HER WAY! This I would not stand for and told her we needed to talk. The last conversation we had was in front of my guest house on the street. I arrived as she was waiting for me and I was calm and collected in what I wanted to discuss with her, but this was not the case. From the second I walked up it was entirely a one-sided screaming session! She stood on the street screaming in my face that I lied and promised her all this work to come to Korea and after a few minutes realizing that there was no point in trying to talk rationally with this person, I told her that I'm not going to stand here on the street and be screamed at! The last thing she yelled at me walking away was, "I NEVER want to see you or talk to you again and don't ever contact **** [so-called boyfriend's name] EVER!" Abiding by her wishes I left her to be. And, I knew at some point I would receive a message in the future, and not to much surprise I received two. The above message is the most vivid, and I would imagine that for those that know me to those that don't you can gather from the insults at the beginning of the message to feeling lost and wanting to talk is a clear example of this person's character.

Once again, I do not hold any anger against this person whatsoever, but I felt that this is a very strong example of how long-term budget travel is not for everyone, and when you scream in someone's face as they stand their calmly that you, "NEVER want to see them again," only to poorly attempt to try and ask them to talk to you, because they have no one else that understands what they've been through I find it hard to reach out to someone, but would prefer to honor their wishes from the beginning by removing all contact. I'll tell you that after this confrontation on a busy public sidewalk in Seoul, I had a completely clear conscience going to bed that night and the only thing that I was relatively sad about was the fact that I was hoping to attempt to talk to this person in a mature and reasonable manner, but you tell me who looked like the foolish one in this situation? I do not say this to try and convince people that I was in the right, but more to just list the ACTUAL facts of what happened, especially after this person left South Korea I learned that she was slandering me around to other individuals that was completely uncalled for, as I didn't once talk negatively to other people that were not involved in this absolute mess!

Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself
in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday. – John Wayne

"Travelers are a different breed of people. They are musicians, artist, semi pro snowboarders and surfers. Writers, archery masters, and sometimes nudists? Getting robbed is nothing but an inconvenience or a reason to just stay put in a city for a while longer and injuries are simply conversation starters into a good story. Cliffs are there to be jumped off of. Your poor physical appearance is nothing a few beers and a dip in the pool can't fix....Some people save their money to spend on a nice house, car, or their retirement. Travelers spend everything they have on experience, the now, the present. Sacrificing stability, possessions, relationships and financial security to invest in living, laughing, dancing, sweating, learning, searching, and discovering the world and themselves. A lot of travelers are considered unique in some way at home or others wild. So what a wild experience to get unique people from all over the world into one room where all of the sudden these individuals who are a different breed at home are now in a community of like minded people. The traveling world is a community of its own. A family away from family. Everyone and everything is accepted, and you are friends with everyone in the room by just walking through the door. Which is the hard part of travel. It isn't the cold showers or sleeping on uncomfortable beds in a room with 10 other people. The bug bites, lack of cleanliness, or crowded buses. It is when it comes time to say good bye to these people you meet. People who have loved you for just being yourself, inspired you to make happy decisions, shared an experience with you that no one else can quite understand without being there. I'm having a hard time saying bye to people that I know I may not ever see again... but happy that I was lucky to meet you." – Courtney Runyon

"If somebody would have told me a year ago that my week long jaunt to Jamaica for spring break was going to turn in to backpacking around the globe for a year, I never would have believed them. While it has been the best thing I ever could have done, it has definitely been hard at times. I am an incredibly lucky person. But so is everyone. It's easy to see someone's life from the outside and think it is more glamorous, happier or easier than yours, especially with people's constant need to brag about what they are doing via social media. How happy or in love they are, the "luckiest person in the world" statements, or pictures of what they are eating, drinking, what party they are at or trip they went on. Sometimes I feel like I’m conforming to this when putting up pictures of my travels. But it is the easiest way to keep my friends and family informed on where I am and what I'm doing. And for that, I am thankful of the old fb. However, that's not to say that everything has been smooth sailing. The most awesome people you meet will have been through the worst. And anyone who has escaped heartache, loss or grueling obstacles that life seems to catapult at them, they truly are the unlucky ones, because they have probably not experienced much at all. Be kind. Be selfless. Be brave." – Ashley Jones

The person that you will spend the most time with in your life is yourself, so you better try and make yourself as interesting as possible. - Author Unknown

Tuesday, November 12, 2013 (DAYS 617 & 618)
While there is an extensive list of must-visit locations throughout Central America, through my own personal travel experiences I’ve narrowed down a short list of some of my favorite places I’ve been fortunate enough to have spent time in, which has been anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Several of these places are well known, but hopefully there are a few hidden gems for those that are seeking adventure or incredible destinations that are not on the typical radar for most tourists or travelers.

Picture
CAYE CAULKER, BELIZE – This small limestone coral paradise on the Caribbean Sea is the lesser-known island to the more popular Ambergris Caye and the town of San Pedro. Backpackers, however, tend to choose this smaller island because of the lack of cruise ships dropping in to port and the cheaper prices.

What I loved about Caye Caulker? The limited number of gas-powered vehicles on the island provides a very serene and relaxing environment. Taking daily strolls around the island, if any locals perceived me to be walking at a pace any faster than that of a turtle I was told with a large smile to take it easy mon, through a thick Rasta accent.

Where to check out? Day or night and a short walk anywhere on the island is the social scene known as ‘The Split.’ There is the myth that Hurricane Keith in 1961 separated the island in two, but actually the Village Counsel made the conscious decision to dredge this waterway to allow an easier access for larger and deeper boats, essentially creating an extremely miniature version of the Panama Canal (haha).

Picture
SEMUC CHAMPEY, GUATEMALA – When I first heard of this amazing spot that everyone that was raving about that was traveling East from Guatemala to Belize, all I could remember was something-champagne. Believe me there is a reason so many travelers have this on the top of their must-list place to visit in Guatemala. Semuc Champey is a natural monument located almost in the dead center of the country, and is only 11km from the small Q'eqchi' Maya town of Lanquin, but don’t be fooled by the distance, as the roads are very rocky and rough. We organized our transportation, which ended up being the back of a crowded pick-up truck with about 30 other locals and took us almost an hour to reach our destination. But, again believe me it is certainly worth it!

What I loved about Semuc Champey? Other than the fact that the stepped, turquoise pools are one of the most inviting natural swimming spots I’ve ever seen, swimming upriver to where these pools are filled you have large cliffs to the right with hanging jungle vines and made me feel like Indiana Jones.

Where to stay when visiting? While there are day trips that are offered from many locations, I suggest traveling to Lanquin and staying at either Zephyr Lodge, which sits atop the hill and has an amazing view of the valley and river below, or where we stayed, which was El Retiro Lodge. El Retiro is located near the river valley and is a stones throw from the river if you choose to stay in the mixed dorm, which is a circular grass tiki hut and comes with the pleasure of listening to the river as you fall asleep at night.

Picture
UTILA, HONDURAS – An island that is once again on the Caribbean Sea, Utila is the smaller lesser-known island to the more popular Roatan, and is where you will find all of the international backpackers seeking to do some diving. While there are numerous dive centers to choose from, Parrots Dive Center, is where we chose to obtain our PADI open water certification.

What I loved about Utila? I cannot say enough great things about Parrots Dive Center–everything from the incredibly friendly staff, regularly tested gear, the air-conditioned classroom, included accommodations in the price ($259) for 5-nights, plus we also received two-free fun dives after receiving our certification and a double-bonus end-of-the-week day trip to one of the cayes, or small uninhabited islands, and our instructor threw us a celebratory BBQ along with other staff members. Parrots, certainly feels more like a family than just a dive center!

Where to check out? Treetanic is one of the most incredible art-deco bars or restaurants I’ve ever seen. You have to experience it to really get an idea for it.

Picture
SAN PEDRO LA LAGUNA, GUATEMALA – Located on Lake Atitlán, this is an extremely relaxing spot with the towering, Volcan San Pedro, opposite of the lake. Another great lookout spot to gather a bird’s eye view rests directly across from the town, the Mayan Face or Indian Nose. Aldous Huxley famously wrote: "Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing."

What I loved about San Pedro? Since I traveled here with my friend Kaya at the end of her travels, I was planning to head to Quetzaltenango, also commonly known by its indigenous name Xela (pronounced shay-la) to take Spanish lessons, but after taking strolls through the town and talking with people I was told that it was much cheaper to take lessons in San Pedro and you have the added bonus of a better view. This is where I was able to negotiate private Spanish lessons down to $2.50 an hour and rented an apartment for $1.41 a night.

Where to check out? Since most of the hostels and backpackers tend to stay closer to the shore, I suggest taking a stroll up the hill and getting lost both wander through the daily local market and the winding steep, often narrow cobblestone streets.

Picture
EL TUNCO, EL SALVADOR – What can I say? Great surf, black volcanic beaches, and again wonderful locals, which causes me to wonder exactly how bad of a reputation this country has that even many backpackers avoided. Still developing and lacking a horde of tourism, this is why I enjoy backpacking, because often, we are the international group willing to break through and experience places before Hilton or Marriot decides that it’s an appropriate location to develop typically dramatically the beauty of the place to begin with. Unfortunately, this was one area that I had the least amount of time spent, because unlike the other countries in the C-4 Agreement–Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua that could careless about abiding by the 90-day tourist visa for visiting any of these countries–El Salvador actually does follow this agreement strictly and after an hour stuck at customs I was harshly told that I had less than a week to exit the country as well as pass through both Honduras and Nicaragua to be clear of the other countries in the C-4. However, this is not true as I obtained 90-day tourist visas for every other country, but I didn’t want to press my luck after this hour-long lecture in Spanglish.

Picture
SAN JUAN DEL SUR, NICARAGUA – There are so many things to say about this incredible piece of paradise that is situated directly on the Pacific Coastline just 20km north of the Costa Rican border. Since this was a place I called home for close to 10-months, I’ve been fortunate enough to make friends with a variety of great wonderful people–everyone from the local guys at the restaurants, the woman at the Mercado that became so familiar with my morning visits that all it took was walking through the entrance and making eye contact and as I picked out some fresh fruit for our hostel’s free morning breakfast as I was leaving she had my brekkie all wrapped up in a container to take with me, and of course all of the incredible foreigners, the various hostel owners, volunteer staff, and of course the backpackers.

Picture
ARENAL, COSTA RICA – A great spot to unwind and relax or to experience a wide variety of outdoor activities, whether that’s hiking around and taking in the incredible views of Arenal Volcano, or when seasonal temps allow, enjoying water activities on Lake Arenal. While some backpackers tend to quickly avoid Costa Rica since it is the most expensive country in Central America, there are still plenty of great areas, such as Arenal, to explore while passing through.

Where to stay? Arenal Backpackers Resort, which is located a short work from the city center of La Fortuna, and has an abundance of positive things going for it. From the spectacular views, friendly staff, on-site swimming pool, and the ability to even take advantage of their new deluxe camping area.

Picture
BOCAS DEL TORO, PANAMA – Located on the Caribbean, it is a short 30-45 minute water taxi from the mainland of Almirante and is home to the infamous Aqua Lounge hostel that was described to me as a floating hostel where you could literally wake up and jump out the window and fall into the Sea. While this is partly true, the ability to enter the water via a window, it is actually still attached to Cayo Carenero, the island just across from Bocas town. I had the privilege or unfortunate mistake–depending on whom you ask, since often backpackers don’t like retuning to places they have already spent time, but to look out on the horizon for new adventures–I returned to Bocas on three separate occasions, and all in all spent close to a combined month in this seaside town, mainly because I had a couple of great friends, Coco and Cat, that lived here and had their own apartment and were kind enough to let me crash on the twin mattress in that seemed to be a permanent fixture in their living room. I also stayed or ending up hostel crashing at almost every place in Bocas.

What I suggest doing? Since there is an abundance of beaches and other islands, we have done everything from renting bicycles for the entire day for $2 and riding out to Playa Bluff to organizing water taxis ($2 - $7) to take us to Red Frog or on the opposite side, which was deserted for our group and my personal favorite nearby–Wizard Beach.

Where to eat? My favorite place was the ocean front restaurant, Raw Sushi, which has an incredible ‘happy hour’ sushi rolls from 4pm – 6pm Tuesday thru Thursday, if I remember correctly for only $4. Obviously this was a constant repeat visit, and often we would be out at a beach and realize that we had less than 45-minutes to make it to this delicious oasis and were panicked to arrive before the happy hour time expired.

Picture
BOQUETE, PANAMA – This quiet mountain town has a refreshing setting, especially if you are traveling from either the hustle and bustle of Panama City (PC) or escaping the dreadful humidity and heat of Bocas del Toro. Named as one of the top places to retire

Where to stay? Mamallena hostel is located directly across from the central plaza park where the local buses arrive from David, since regardless of traveling from PC or Bocas, this is the main transfer hub leading in almost every direction. The owner, Miguel, is an extremely warm and friendly Panamanian that is unbelievably hospitable. There were several nights that he threw an entire family-style BBQ for guests and even invited non-guests to join in on this free meal. This is also a full service hostel as you can gather information about local activities and even schedule transportation bookings if you are seeking a more direct route to areas, but this will be a bit more expensive than utilizing local transportation and transferring buses in David.

What to do? While this was the most strenuous hike I have ever done, and that being said from a Coloradan, the overnight Volcan Baru hike is a must. Not only is this the highest point in all of Panama, if you are fortunate enough to be there (as we were) during a break in the clouds or a clear day, you can actually view both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean practically simultaneously. The downside, in some ways making it exhausting, is this is typically best being done as either as an overnight hike beginning at the base around midnight, which we did, or hiking to just past the midway point and camping overnight at the designated campsite, which I knew a few friends did. You can also rent camping gear if you haven’t brought your own as the mixture of rain, wind, and dropping overnight temps make this a necessary time to check your cold weather gear. My friend Rachel, who is from NY and has hiked over 20 different mountains in a single year, also agreed that this was the most strenuous hike she has done and she even did the overnight camping to break up the hike over two-days. So be prepared.

MY RTW PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
My last full day in Seoul is still a busy one. Similar to most backpackers, we are masters of utilizing the resources around us, and one of those at Mugunghwa House is a proper washing machine. The joys and headaches of packing is the dreadful chore that we all hate. Since there is no dryer onsite I’ve had to calculate the amount of time it will take for some of my thicker materials to hang dry (jeans and fleece jacket), and after laying them out on the rack I’ve asked Leslie if she’d like to do some souvenir shopping with me and grab some lunch as well. Just after 1pm we head towards the Hongdae University area, and since this is the first time I have purchased any souvenirs in all of my traveling, mainly because of being on a strict budget accompanied with shipping costs, the only people on my list that I’m purchasing small items for are my two sisters that are also Korean adoptees and my two nieces because I want them to have something that is part of their heritage and culture. Since I’m not one for sluggishly wandering from shop to shop, I am able to quickly find a few items that I think the girls will both enjoy and find some humor out of, and this even impresses Leslie with how quickly I’m able to find gifts.

Picture
After a relatively short lunch and great conversation regarding what it feels like to be an adoptee, which we both agree that no one else can relate to unless they are in this same category, it is a great chance for us to bond over this, at times, sensitive topic. I told her how sorry I was for her that she has yet to locate her birth parents and has been told by Eastern that they have exhausted all of their resources and it seems a bit hopeless and frustrating.

We return back to the guesthouse in the late afternoon just as the winds are continuing to pick up and the sun is beginning to drop behind the towering skyscrapers. I have one last load of laundry to wash and begin the task of army-style rolling my clothing and shoving it in my bag. As I’m doing this I message my sister and ask if she would like to have dinner tomorrow evening since I am planning to stay the night at the airport and she lives nearby. Extremely excited by this invitation she agrees and later Crystal comes in and tells me that my mother has called her and has rented a car for my sister and instead of meeting at the airport tomorrow that she will be picking me up and driving me there personally, but first she is planning to take me to a fancy last supper. I am just shocked at the kindness of my Korean family and how hospitable and welcoming they have been. We agree upon a time of 6:30pm tomorrow evening, which allows me to relax from packing up quickly since I was planning to take the subway in the morning to the airport, which is a chore with 40lbs on your back plus an additional 30lbs that I’m carrying like a pregnant woman. I feel a sense of relief knowing that I can sleep in and have plenty of time to get the gifts mailed to my sisters back in the States. Life is full of surprises and I can’t help but be grateful thinking that I now have three beautiful sisters that care for me very much.

TRAVELING THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES

The best way to pursue happiness is to help other people. Nothing else will make you happier. - George Lucas

Picture
Thursday, October 31, 2013 (DAY 605)
Even though I am in a First World country that ranks #13 in the world’s most dynamic economies, I often miss Third World countries. This may sound absolutely insane to many people, because you often think of both rural environments, sanitation and health issues, as well as general safety, but from spending a fair amount of time in what is considered Third World countries, I find the overall populus much happier and while they may not have the luxuries of materialistic objects, their quality of life seems much happy and the family dynamic structure is more in tact. Don’t get me wrong, growing up in the United States I certainly appreciate many of the opportunities and things that I was given, but I feel that maybe as a global society we need to take a harder look at what is truly important in our lives. For example, being in Korea there has been a rapid, almost overnight transformation of Western culture and influence. The pressure of women and even men about physical appearance is becoming more prevalent. Self identity is lost and replaced with people’s potential earning power, education level, and career fields. Stop and think about when you meet a new person, often the question is, ‘what do you do for a living?’ And based upon this reponse people tend to sum you as an individual up by a few short words–teacher = probably not making much money, construction worker = often uneducated labor worker, doctor = smart and wealthy, and the list goes on. I know that through many of the conversations I’ve had with other travelers, we enjoy that while as mundane and repetitive the questions may be about where you are from and traveling and etc, at least people are not only interacting but they are not as quick to define you or pigeonhole you to a specific type A or type B person, but taking the time to get to know you as a person. Since I have had a very hectic week, and have lots to catch up on while the memories are fresh I will just say that there are several things I do miss about Third World countries and give a short list:

Picture
COSTS:
As a backpacker these are the countries that offer the best bang for your buck! While scams and hustling are an issue, these countries tend to be more relaxed about tourists visa days allowed, border entry and exit fees, and for many countries they have a separate division of tourists police because a significant part of their economy relies upon those that are willing to travel to these so-called dangerous or underdeveloped countries. But things such as accommodation, food, drinks, even activites are much cheaper. For example I did a single-day diving trip in 2010 in Australia when I was still working in television and paid over $680 for 3 dives, while on the other hand I paid $259 for my PADI Open Water Diving Certification in Utila, Honduras with Parrots Dive Center that included the mandatory amount of dives, classroom materials, an additional two fun dives after being certified that were about 45-minutes each, a celebratory day-trip to one of the uninhabitated islands in the Caribbean, and 5-nights of accommodation in a 4-bed dorm. And yes, all of this for only $259.

LUXURIES:
While you can still find hotel rooms with air-conditioning, when you’re traveling and staying where other locals or backpackers stay this is often not an option, but embrace it. You will be amazed at what your body can get adjusted to, whether that be the cold or the heat). Also another obvious, but I will still mention it, don’t visit any country regardless of what so-called degree it may be considered and expect the same type of luxuries you are used to back home (i.e. firm beds, western toilets, etc).

SIMPLICITIES OF LIFE:
Yes power outages ocurred often at times, but instead of breaking down and getting pissed off, we chose to view this as an opportunity to set down our electronic devices and have even more conversations. I feel that especially being in Korea and talking with a variety of people in age, the older generation worries that the younger generation is so enthralled in their smart phones that the idea of human interaction is all done through social apps, texting, Facebooking, etc. and we forget what it’s like to talk. I remember my parents began texting us when it was dinner time and how often do you see couples (in a wide variety of ages) sitting in restaurants or bars not speaking to one another as they sit directly across from one another and just staring at their smartphones, often playing games not even communicating with another person. Very sad.

Picture
While I try and also give the cons even after the pros about something, there are some but I still feel, personally, that these are minor issues and have always said that I would rather live dirt poor on a beach or something happy with every day of my life than making a six-figure income in the States stressed out and hating my life, because once again the quality of life, to me, easily is more important than the quantity of life. I also would tell people that 5-years from now who cares if you drove a BMW are you really going to remember that? When I look back on my life in 5-years I would like to think of all of the experiences I have had, the people that I have met, those I was able to help, and the places that I have been. Once again please don’t think I’m trying to come off sitting on a pedistal trying to tell people how they should live their lives, I just want to continue to encourage people to be open to how much of the rest of the world does live, and while they have little-to-nothing, their level of happiness is something we as a more modern of First World society should take a closer look at in general. So some of the quick negatives:

Picture
INCONSISTENT UTILITIES:
There can be things such as I mentioned, power outages that occur frequently and can last for hours or even days. I have also experienced times where water went dry from the faucets for a few hours or even an entire day.

THEFT:
Because these countries are quite poor it seems that petty theft is a larger problem. For example in Nicaragua when the average monthly salary for an individual is just over $160, and people carrying smartphones around (which are just now beginning to come down to an affordable price for many people) they often view these objects as something that can be stolen and sold and cover feeding their entire family for several months.

EDUCATION/COMMON SENSE:
While I don’t want to poke fun at this, my friend Lindsay and I would always say that common sense is non-existent in many areas of Central America, and it’s due to the fact that education standards or just continuing education may not be available to all families, often due to the cost to send a child to school.

So again these are just a few things that are pros and cons about Third World countries I thought I would share. And, again as surprisingly as it may sound to many of you, I do enjoy traveling Third World countries very much, because the people tend to be so wonderful and inviting.

MY RTW PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
Today is our earliest morning according to the schedule for the week. Most of us are waking up at or before 6am, which makes for a rough morning since several of us did not make it back to Mugunghwa House until after midnight. One of the interesting things in Korean culture is that it is a late-night culture. It is very rare to find a coffee shop or any restaurant open before 11am. The reason for this is that many shops will stay open late in to the night, even on weeknights. When I asked about this, I was told from a local that it is a problem and is actually often a reason for divorce, because men are pressured to work both long hours as well as be expected to participate in after work dinners and drinks. It is also a cultural difference that workers will not leave the office until their boss or superior does, which from what I’ve personally noticed averages around 8pm. Also it tends to be a reverse drinking culture, where once again young men growing up are spending all of their time studying in high school and university to obtain highly valued careers that there is not time for going out for drinks, so the reverse aspect of this is that you will often see grown men in full on business suits puking on the side of the street or passed out in the street in their suits because they are not used to drinking in this manner, but oddly has become a part of Korean culture, I think some from Western influence. Our volunteer translator, Eileen, tells us that we can wait in their small café while she finds the person who will be giving us a tour of the facility. After a short video that was played off of a VHS tape, old school yo, we toured the various programs that are offered in each of the four or five buildings we visitied. The first was a facility that trained mentally challenged or disabled people and helped to provide them with skills such as baking, running the small café or shop, and the Korean version of Dunder Miffilin–a paper supply minifactory that was again ran by a group of mentally challenged adults in their 30s. We also had a chance to visit the school that ranges from a kindergarten through high school and were given a tour by the director or principal of the school. Once again I was glad to see that the interior of the building was not drab, but full of colorful artwork and photos on the walls and if you didn’t know any better you might easily mistake it for a smaller public school in the States. We were hoping to visit ‘Jacob’s Home,’ which is where many of the children that had not been adopted at ESWS while babies or placed in foster care, were moved to this facility to be with children that are a bit older. One of the girls in our group, Hanah our lone Aussie, actually had a deeper connection with this facility because she was adopted from here after living in ‘Jacob’s Home’ until she was about 3 and a half years old. Unfortunately the building is under construction and we were unable to tour it. Both her and I had also brought a few gifts for the kids, and this also bummed us out that we would not have a chance to meet with them as many of the kids were on a field trip for the day so we had to leave our gifts with one of the school administrators. On our way to tour ‘Esther’s Home’ was by far my favorite part of the day. As we were walking by the quad there was a group of both American troops and ROK (Republik of Korea) soldiers playing with some of the toddlers. Being told to wait for a moment, after a few short minutes we received permission from our guide that it would be ok to join them. Eager to start playing with the kids we started to jump the small boulders surrounding the grassy area and start playing with the kids alongside the soldiers. Losing track of time, and needing to keep to our rigid schedule, we were soon told that we had one last building to tour, which was ‘Esther’s Home.’ This facility is for pregnant unwed mothers that are given refuge from bad home environments or abusive situations and are given everything from housing to education courses as well as professional counseling sessions. Some of the women are planning to give their children up for adoption, while others plan to raise their children themselves and are given a variety of resources to secure housing and employment skills for after they leave ‘Esther’s Home.’ At the end of our tour our guide was a very humorous Korean, that often did not mean to be, and one of the funniest parts of the tour was when he was telling us that he has a younger daughter that loves some American television shows and when we asked which ones in particular he said, “Wimpy Kid and Captain Underpants.” As soon as he said this, our entire group couldn’t hold in the laughter, and finally someone said do you mean “SpongeBob SquarePants?” Awe, oh yes, he said, and still we could not stop laughing. At the end of the tour we all thanked him for everything and boarded the bus to head to our next destination, Minsokchon (Korean Folk Village), which was an hour away.

Picture
Arriving close to 2pm, way off schedule from our itinerary, by this point our group was starving. After speaking with Eileen she told us that we would be having lunch at a restaurant inside Minsokchon (한국 민속촌), which is a living museum of a traditional Korean Folk Village in the city of Yongin. The purpose of this highly touristy destination is to display traditional Korean life and culture. Since our group was more concerned with food that sightseeing, we chose a restaurant rather quickly and were informed that we were given individual budgets of ₩11,000 ($10.34) for our meal, which wasn’t difficult as there were only a few items on this limited menu that exceeded this per diem. Lunch was an excellent time that allowed each of us to talk about our various experiences growing up, shared some painful memories of the racial slurs and teasing we each experienced, but we also talked about the hilarious stereotypes that we embrace with family and close friends. Everything from nicknames of ninjas, sad pandas, and even at one point when Hanah wandered off after ordering her food to purchase some gifts for her husband and two-year-old son, when the food arrived, Mikey being sarcastic went in to a few shops looking for her and asked if they had seen a short Asian girl. Dumbfounded the shopkeepers didn’t find humor in this, but of course, when he returned and told us this, we all laughed and thought how great it was to be in a country–our country, where we weren’t a minority. We also had a great discussion about dumb things white people say to us, here’s just a few things that tend to annoy us and we find pretty insulting:

Where are you from? And when we answer things like Colorado, Minnesota, New York, they follow up with no, no I mean where are you really from.

Asking our parents so who is this? Oh so you’re not a foreign exchange student?

The phrase ‘me love you long time,’ get some new material.

I bet you know karate or something huh? So according to this logic being white I bet you know how to shape a pillowcase into a cone and make a noose.

So being adopted, you should feel really grateful. Ok number one, yes I am grateful for the opportunities I was given, but that’s just very offensive on a lot of levels. That’s like telling a person’s biological kid that they should feel special because their parents decided to have sex and they were born. Really people! Constantly pointing out the fact that we are different from our families BECAUSE we are adopted is VERY insulting and rude!

I feel as though the girls get a lot worse…they HATE things like when guys come up to them and tell them that they have an Asian fetish, they have the yellow fever, they’ve always been in to Asian girls, etc.

So seriously people, I know that racial sensitivity and political correctness is often over exaggerated, but just STOP and fricken think about the stuff that you are saying at times. It’s similar to the fact that OUR close friends and among each other, we can make fun of one another and often it is self-deprecating, but if we don’t know you and you try one of these things, you will unleash the ninja-dragon. For example it’s just as with African-Americans there is a certain degree of words that can be thrown around among one another, and within the Asian community it is the same. So just again stop and think and have some respect.

Picture
Since many of us were so exhausted after lunch, we made a group decision to forego the guided tour and limited our time to about 30 more minutes after lunch at Minsokchon before taking the almost 2-hour bus ride back to Seoul. I think within minutes of boarding the bus the majority of us were quickly asleep or at least tried very hard to sleep. About 4:45pm we arrived back at ESWS and immediately I was pulled aside from Ms. Kang where she informed me that unfortunately Eastern would not be able to accommodate her for her one-night stay in Seoul or help with the expenses, since time was running short–knowing my mom was arriving tomorrow–Ms. Kang was at least able to find a hotel that was just a few short blocks away. Since it was already late Thursday afternoon and many hotels and guesthouses can fill up over the weekend in the city, we literally sprinted down the street to the hotel hoping that there was a vacancy. By the way, Ms. Kang is fast for a shorter Korean–I’m talking marathon speeds. Since Eastern was unable to help assist in the cost for my mom’s accommodation, I paid the ₩40,000 ($37.60) out of my own money, which was a little bit of a hit since I was still averaging my daily spending of between $4-12 a day. Regardless, I was just thankful to have a room secured for her when she arrives tomorrow afternoon. After this transaction was completed, once again Ms. Kang and I sprinted as though there were a pack of velociraptors chasing us, and by the time we made it back to ESWS (a quick 3-minute run) there was a taxi waiting where Mikey, Danielle, and Kaitlynn were already sitting inside waiting on me to take us back to Mugunghwa House. On the short drive to the house we were discussing doing a group dinner since this was our only night of the week and the program, where there was no scheduled evening activities and the first item on Friday’s agenda didn’t begin until 4pm for most people. Everyone was in agreement of this idea, but wanted to relax a bit first since it was only about 5:30pm after we arrived at the guesthouse. Thinking this would be a great opportunity to just lay on my bed and maybe even get in a power nap, as soon as I walked in the house and my iPhone connected to the Wi-Fi I received a Kakao message from my CouchSurfing from Ara, a local that has grown up in Korea and is also very interested in traveling, asking if I wanted to meet up with her since she was on the subway at the moment and could be in my area in the next 15 minutes. Asking if it’s possible to meet up later, she said either she was going to get off at the Hognik University station or keep taking the train to head back to her University, which is an hour and a half away. Feel the pressure to make a decision I decided since our group was thinking of going out for dinner later and no one wanting a late night. I figured this would be fine. Fight off the exhaustion, you just have to do it sometimes, is what I told myself. So still rushing from one place to another I grabbed a local bus and headed to the subway to meet Ara. Meeting Ara was a great experience. Since she spoke English very well, she was able to give me more insight in to Korean culture. I know that I had learned a few things from other Americans that have been living here for anywhere from 2-8 plus years but hearing it from a local that grew up in the culture is completely different. We shared a lot of laughs and she was very interested in all my travels backpacking since she is planning her first trip out of Korea to India in December, so I was able to give her some tips. I continued to wait to hear back from the rest of the group about dinner, but the enthusiasm wore off quickly and exhaustion won the battle even in spite of not having an early morning. Since the subway stops running at midnight and we lost track of time talking about so many different things. It was 11:30pm when we departed, but we made plans to keep in touch since her University is only 30-minutes away from Iksan, the city my birth mother lives in, and she said that she would love to meet her and help be a translator for us since I told her that ESWS would only be providing us with a translator for Friday afternoon and again on Saturday until about 3 or 4pm while we were in Yoseou. I knew it would be a struggle with a lot of hand gestures with the absence of a translator. So when she agreed to meet up with us Saturday afternoon or evening I was very excited. After a very quick goodbye she headed to the subway and I began the 20-minute walk back to Mugunghwa house, where I proceeded to pass out like a NyQuil® addict.
