Life is 10 percent of what happens to you and 90 percent of how you react to it. – Charles R. Swindoll

Saturday, March 5, 2016 (DAY 1,460)
Today embarks a major milestone–a landmark that I feel should be shared and celebrated with so many people, because this amazing journey would not have been possible without so many individuals in helping me to achieving this remarkable feet! I've learned throughout life to show gratitude by pausing to appreciate both accomplished successes and having a genuine attitude of thankfulness. Therefore, with today's blog, I feel that this is something many of you can also pause for a moment and know you have helped be apart of this very large milestone! Everyone from my parents, to my amazing sisters and their incredibly amazing husbands and families, my brothers (whom are my cousins, but I consider them to be brothers) Dave and Mike, one of my many great mentors, Mike Vlad, my Cali boys and best college roommate, Jesse the Fyter, all of the amazing colleagues I worked with for 12-years in broadcast television including all the amazing freelancers in Denver (long live all those early morning setups and long late night strikes fellas), the incredible group of friends in Colorado including my softball teams that won numerous undefeated championships with, my boy Schlim, and to all the incredible friends that I've met throughout the past four-years that live throughout the globe! Seriously, THANK YOU,  from the bottom of my heart!

Once again, and I know I've mentioned this before numerous times, but I could have never imagined exactly four-years ago that it might be possible to still be out traveling this many years later! Often before leaving Denver, Colorado on that cold winter morning in March and after selling nearly every material possession I owned, I imagined that I could easily have returned to the United States; unemployed, moving back in with my parents or friends, and having a feeling a defeat, but this was sort of a risk that I was willing to make in order to live out a dream, and I knew that with all dreams there are sacrifices to be made!

For those that don't know me or haven't heard what I was willing to give up to pursue a dream, I'd like to begin by saying that I was NOT unhappy with my life nor was I running away or searching for something feeling lost, but it was quite the opposite. First, I wrestled with this decision for nearly a year, having my own doubts, because I knew what I would be giving up essentially.

I gave up the luxury of my four-bedroom three-bathroom very comfortable bachelor pad of a home that I purchased in 2002, but thankfully was blessed with an amazing tenant–a single-mother that was able to call my home hers and raise her children for four-years–I cannot thank her enough for taking care of my home so well these past four years. I also  resigned from HDNet (AXStv) as the Program Manager, which was an incredibly difficult decision–one that I at one point I actually asked my former boss, Rachael, about delaying my resignation date, but thankfully she declined this as told me that interviews for my position were already underway, thank you Rachael for not letting my self-doubts keep me from beginning an entirely new chapter of my life!

For those that truly know me best, know that I don't make big decisions on a whim. I'm an individual that is very methodical and analytical, one that was not the biggest fan of surprises or change–something that of course would change as a budget traveler–I was also one that could be called a bit of a homebody and was a creature of routine. So as brave as you may think I may be, I still had my own doubts and anxieties!

While solo travel and backpacking were not entirely foreign to me, the last time I had attempted such a trip was when I was about 21 or 22 and headed off to Europe by myself for nearly 6-weeks. And, as I look back at this experience I view this–as I always have felt that everything in life happens for a reason and while we may not be able to recognize it at the time by life surprises you with these past experiences–as sort of a foundation for travel, especially what NOT to do, haha. This first trip to Europe I ended up often going way outside my budget, abandoning dorms in hostels for the comforts of hotels (stupidly paying around $400 for one night at the Hilton located directly next to the Eiffel Tower as an example), and this was a necessary experience to teach me that if I was going to do this, that I had to be EXTREMELY disciplined with both my budget and mentally preparing for the budget traveler's living environments of dorm life.

I'll tell you what, it's not the easiest thing going from living alone and sleeping in an extremely amazing pillow top queen size mattress, which I will admit I often do miss, and a spacious bathroom with an incredible high-pressure faucet that I installed to sleeping in bunk beds at the age of 30 and sharing sleeping arrangements with snoring monsters and showering in communal bathrooms that many people would without hesitation LITERALLY would view a dingy Motel 6 as a five-star penthouse suite at the Bellagio compared to some of the places I've slept and called home. This again is the UNGLAMOROUS side of being a budget traveler.

Even as I set out on a one-way ticket bound for Belize uncertain and unsure where life may lead me or take me, but living entirely on faith, because I know that many colleagues, friends, and possibly family members thought I was having a quarter-life crisis or searching for something, but in reality this was something that I had always felt was going to eventually be part of my life, even as a teenager. I know that I spent a lot of time talking with my brother Dave about this, and I have to give him credit in many ways for being the first of my closest friends to have the courage, even in spite of people questioning his decision to join the military, and to leave behind family and friends as well as the state of Colorado. Salut, mi amigo, often my partner in many shenanigans and crime while growing up! I've learned that courage in the face of adversity is often a path you must walk alone. The life lessons that I've learned throughout the past four-years have legitimately and beyond questioned pushed me to my limits physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and etc.

I have no problem admitting that there were numerous times that I contemplated whether or not I should return to the States and if it were time to end this journey. Yet, with each difficult experience, once again I was not haste to make decisions and often had to fight through many obstacles. I feel that I've seen some of the best in humanity and sadly some of the worst, I've learned what I want to continue to strive to become and most certainly what I do not, I've learned that life is a constant journey no matter what the situations may be and where you may call home. Life is difficult friends and it's how you respond to adversity that will either develop your character or allow you to become one of those individuals that sadly goes through the motions of life just kind of waiting to reach a plateau instead of continually striving to become something more.

I know that often people on social media only see the beautiful photographs of some of the places I've been fortunate and blessed to stand and take in, BUT, what many of you do not see is the 14-hour bus rides, being scammed by everyone from taxi drivers to immigration officers, overcoming the physical and mental exhaustion especially among language barriers and sanitation difficulties, and this makes me wonder exactly how many people would be able to endure much of what it took to get to some of these beautiful locations to snap a photo
just to post it to Instragram? I will be honest here and say probably less than 5% of the people I know back in the States. This isn't to be a knock to any of you by any means, it's just an example to demonstrate that again my life isn't all roses and sunshine. There have been more gloomy days than if I would have just stayed in Colorado and kept advancing through my professional career. And, therefore I want to continue to hopefully inspire you to challenge yourself. Challenge your ideals. Challenge your faith. Challenge your work ethic. Challenge and grow in all aspects of your life and pursue the dreams that you may have by beginning to make changes even now and working hard towards something that may seem impossible.

Well in closing, as I have found myself waking up naturally between 4am-6am daily, and running yet another entrepreneurial venture– this time without any partners–I do have some things to get done today as I was awake 10-minutes before 5am here in Seoul, therefore I apologize for any misspellings and grammatical mistakes. I just wanted to continue to thank everyone in helping me to celebrate this amazing milestone! I will end with a nice Korean proverb (고생 끝에 낙이 온다) pronunciation: Go-saeng Ggeut-eh naki eun-da and the literal meaning is "at the end of hardship comes happiness." I couldn't sum it up better in terms that many sacrifices have been made but through trials and hardships life truly is how you tend to perceive it and how you react to situations you cannot control. Therefore, I hope to continue to encourage and inspire people to get out of their comfort zones and to find ways to share their happiness with others through pursuing and using your own God-given talents!

WHY I QUIT MY PROFESSIONAL CAREER TO TRAVEL THE WORLD

What I've learned is that if you really want to be successful at something, you'll find that you put the time in. You won't just ask somebody if it's a good idea, you'll go figure out if it's a good idea. – Mark Cuban

Monday, February 29, 2016 (DAY 1,455)
Exactly four years ago today–the last time there was a leap year–it was my last day of my professional career as the Program Manager for #HDNet (#AXStv) and I could not have had more influential, and yes a very eccentric owner and president that taught me many things, Mark Cuban. I also cannot say enough wonderful things about Rachael Weaver, my former boss and mentor, that progressed as the Senior Director of Network Programming to Vice President of Programming, and is most recently the General Manager of HDNet Movies. And finally, I must thank Philip Garvin the former Chief Operating Officer (#COO) of HDNet, and also the CEO of both Colorado Studios and Mobile TV Group.

This trifecta of individuals set me on a career path that encouraged and taught me many things about; how to operate a business, treat employees, and continued to develop a work ethic within me that I still continue to use to this day through all of my entrepreneurial endeavors.

Obviously, there have also been other numerous individuals that have helped encourage me professionally and as much as I would like to name all of them, I'd like to give some honorable mentions to; Travis Swenson (Engineer-in-Charge #EIC and assisted him in building mobile TV truck Mountain Mobile #MMT 6), Joe Cronin, Glenn Valenta (RIP), Glenn Moore (Director of Broadcast Operations for AXS TV), Jacque McNair (best Post-Production Suprervisor that allowed me to lounge in her office from time-to-time and often helped with my office shenangians and pranks), Kelly Porter (of the notorious Edit Bay 6), Bo Vongsakoun (Producer and now EP of ONE Championship), Angela Seda (Garvin), Darrell Ewalt (EP of Sports), Lauren Riaski Young, Robert Ray (Dallas office), Evan Haiman (infamous EP of Music and Entertainment), Wayne Nelson (former EP of the CBS Evening News and now the EP of Dan Rather Reports), Dan Rather himself (#legend), Jeff Cuban (Mark's brother whom I worked with for years and is now the Executive Vice President for AXS TV), Judy Arbogast, Robert Theole (our amazing in-house Legal Attorney), Brian Brieske, Russ Rollins and Mike Miller (amazing accountants), Paula Avila, Glenn Nickerson, Carol McDaniel, Gregg Dobbs, Lenny Young, Kim Francis, Jessica Sorber, Megan Magana, Colette Carey, Pete Eichert, Lauren McKillop, Shannon and Drek Lofdahl, Laurie Sommers, Jennifer Parr, Sara Arbogast, Dan Farley, Sarah Cook, Ed Martinez (helped train me in my first live NBA Denver Nuggets game), Nick Bee, Billi Capra (KSE), Brian Peters (camera and director extraordinaire), Mike Treber, Josh Winter, and the list goes on and on!

I wish I could name each and every person, including all the amazing television freelancers I've worked with for years in Denver as well as those in Los Angeles and New York, especially being given the responsibility when I was about 23-years-old and I was honored to be the Crewing Coordinator for Monday Night Football for the Denver market by Hal Schmidt (EP for #ABC/#ESPN Sports in NYC), just so many people that I feel I cannot thank enough!

However, as I mentioned the trifecta of individuals that truly helped develop my professional career and set me on a professional path are truly unique individuals and I would like to take a moment and talk about them and how they were incredible mentors that instilled a strong work ethic within me and I am both greatly honored to have worked with them, alongside them, and, of course, to have learned from them daily!

I will begin with Philip Garvin, since he was the CEO of Colorado Studios that hired me back in October of 2000 when I was only 18-years-old, a newly high school graduate and only in my first month of college.

I'll never forget meeting with him for my second and final interview, because at that time the company was so small that Philip insisted on conducting all final interviews even as an entry level Runner/Production Assistant position. I'll never forget sitting in the conference room of the office–just the two of us–and he asked me, "Troy, where do you see yourself in five-years?" Pausing for a moment, I answered honestly and said, "I have no idea. All I know is that I have just recently graduated from high school and am just beginning college."

Since, I had sent my resume to their company applying for a Senior Accounting Position via Monster.com, with the objective I stated on the top of my resume: Any Entry Level Position Available due to my limited professional work experience other than the typical after-school jobs, we both knew that this was a bit of a gamble hiring someone so young.

After pausing for a moment, Philip, said that he was willing to give me a chance, even though I still wasn't quite sure what their company did (even after asking several times to both Theresa Shaw and Philip) and what my responsibilities were, because it was difficult to explain. Some days I was picking up clients from the airport in the company vehicle, other days I was sweeping out the hangar where our mobile television production trucks were being built, or even walking around the property with a canister of weed killer spraying weeds. I even contemplated quitting after a few weeks because some days I felt like a janitor.

But, of course, I am glad that I stuck with it, because later I realized that the company was testing me to see how much they could trust me with various responsibilities. After the first few weeks, I began driving expensive $100,000-plus cameras and other television equipment to the various stadiums around Colorado. Through this, Philip taught me that trust is earned, before responsibility is given. He also taught me a great deal of how to operate a company by how to treat employees, something I would later learn that other former business partners lacked greatly in, primarily my last business partner (you can read that blog HERE).

Once I announced that I would be leaving the company on November 1, 2012 (providing the company with four-months notice, which many family and close friends thought was far too much time, but I knew our company all too well, and I wanted to show my gratitude and respect) because after 12-years, I always knew that I would schedule a time to sit down with Philip to thank him personally for everything.

We discussed how much the company has grown through more than a decade, all of the different roles I was fortunate enough to be promoted into, and this was the time that I received the absolute greatest professional compliment one could.

As I sat in Philip's office, we spoke for nearly an hour if memory serves me correctly, which for a COO of a national television network and a CEO of two separate businesses is quite amazing that he would let calls go unanswered!
I asked him, "do you remember when you interviewed me nearly 12-years ago and asked, 'where you see yourself in five-years?' and I didn't have an answer for you? Well, Philip, I just want to thank you personally, because by taking that chance on me, I am forever grateful because that chance and decision put me on a career path that I would never had contemplated."

Looking back at me across from his desk was when I received the largest compliment as he looked me directly in the eyes and said, "Troy, I feel that I should be the one thanking you! Every single position we have promoted you to throughout the years, not only did you do an incredible job, but you surpassed my [and our] expectations!"

After hearing this, I was completely speechless! All I could do was smile. Stand up. And, shake his hand. He also told me that wherever this journey may take me, that if I do end up returning to Colorado on a more permanent basis that I should contact him first, and that again showed me the type of CEO I knew I wanted to be in the future. Therefore, thank you again Philip for everything that you have taught me both directly and indirectly!

My final email to Mark Cuban and his response!
The eccentric billionaire, NBA Dallas Mavericks owner, entrepreneur, Shark Tank investor TV host, and a man of many other hats! I've had the pleasure of meeting Mark in person and at first I was pretty amazed at how tall he is more than 6'2" (190 cm) and I hope he finds this to be a bit humorous. I also had the great pleasure of interviewing Mark for a college paper, since I was working full time for HDNet while attending the University of Colorado at Boulder, and if memory serves me correctly, I entitled my paper The Rise of Digital Media.

Even though Mark lives and works primarily out of Dallas, Texas, there was always a constant exchange of emails that he was always included on and responded to as he insisted on being heavily involved in all decision-making process of our network. And, throughout the years I learned a great deal from watching his interviews, hearing his take on controversial business tactics and strategies, one that comes to mind is how he complete shook up the current Hollywood model and all of the major studios with his Day-and-Date-Release (Simultaneous Release), since he owned companies that allowed him to produce a film, market it, distribute it in his own chain of national theaters (Landmark Theaters), premiere the film on our sister channel HDNet Movies, and consumers could purchase the film via Amazon and other online resources.

This completely challenged the traditional model of how films were released in theaters where after months it was released for consumer purchase and filtered down through the premium cable channels and then after more months or possible a year or more it eventually would be seen on broadcast television. This still continues to be the case today as Netflix and other networks are continuing to change the face of both broadcast television and the entertainment industry as a whole, which, I of course continue to follow from time to time.

I feel that I am very much of an observational entrepreneur. One that is highly analytical and methodical. I am constantly pausing to quietly observe and study various business models, both those that have been successful and especially those that have failed!

I feel that I must give both Philip and Mark a lot of credit for the fact that the businesses I have started in life have all been profitable within a seven-day period with limited partners and investments of no more than $100 per partner. Also, my last business venture had more than a 60% profit margin with extremely low overhead costs and my former partner fought me on many of the business models I had to convince him of in order to be both relevant and grow the business. This model has been something I've continued to develop and I've also learned the value of branding and adapting to the ever-changing global market of international business. Several others in the past have tried to take my successful businesses and models by recreating them without success, and again I've learned from some of the very best business owners and therefore by working hard and understanding these systems has also helped to ensure the protection of my own entrepreneurial ventures for the most part.

I wish I had access to some of the direct quotes from Mark from our interview years ago, but even without it, I just want to thank Mark for all he did for my career by placing an enormous amount of trust in me! So, Mark how about a ride on your private jet to my next global travel destination, lol? Hit me back on twitter, @troyhendershott :)

Finally, I come to my former boss, Rachael Weaver...Wow where to even begin?! I cannot say enough wonderful things about Rachael. She has accomplished so much throughout her career and life and I feel that I would literally need a series of novels just to explain our professional relationship and all of the amazing things I have learned from her that spanned more than a decade.

Ironically, I first met her husband Mark, while working a broadcast television freelance event with him, and later when Rachael was brought in as the Programming Director for the first all-high-definition television network that was developed by Philip and Mark and launched in September of 2001, we were able to connect the dots.

Rachael is by far one of the hardest working people I have EVER met! She was always in her office early in the morning until late into the evening most days. In my opinion, she often was the driving force that kept our network both on-air with our programming and ensured that our contracts, promos, and commercials were delivered (often last minute).

While I was dubbed as Rachael's number two (even heard whispers of being referred to as a Mini-Rachael, which never bothered me, but I saw a complete compliment) in the Programming Department, our department began with just three of us; Rachael, Kim Allen, and myself. Wow, when I think back to operating a national television's Programming Department with three people where each of us wore many different hats and operated using Excel spreadsheets for years still brings a smile to my face!

A short trip down memory lane, I think about how Kim and I worked together to create our own library system, keeping contracts in binders, a constant pile of HDCam tapes around my office space–often overflowing my bookshelves, and days that I would fill in as an editor, Quality Control (QC) Specialist, calling editors or producers to notify them of the spelling or technical errors I would find, watching Rachael and Kim organize our little team into one that become an extremely efficient tripod!

Well, of course, as our company and network grew so did our staff. I would meet with Rachael daily, often more than once and came to enjoy our daily meetings–I'll never forget even helping her prepare to take the United States Citizenship test, since she was born in America's top hat aka Canada, lol. On a side note, I love to tease my Canadian friends, and I'll never forget when I called my traveling mate Krista Braun a top hat. When she asked what that meant, and I told her that Canada is just America's top hat, without skipping a beat through her wit and humor she said, "well, that's because it's where America keeps it's brains!" Ouch! haha. I had to laugh and give her props for such a quick and witty comeback, aye!

Returning back to our topic, the other very memorable moments of the previous chapter in my in life of broadcast television that I enjoyed were our weekly staff meetings, and was honored to be entrusted with such responsibilities, including being there to coordinate the last NASA Space Shuttle launch of the current era, since Rachael was on vacation and the shuttle launch had been scrubbed numerous times.

I'll never forget that as I was out at happy hour with a few friends, Tim and Miriam Laws, telling them of my future plans to leave my job I received a phone call from our TV Host, Greg Dobbs, where he told me he had just came out of a meeting with NASA in Florida and that there was a 30% chance the shuttle would launch in the next 24-hours or so.

Immediately, I sprung into action–of course taking a page from the good ole Rachael playbook–and apologized to my friends as I stepped outside to make a variety of phone calls to all of the executives that needed to be notified. I told all of our Department Heads that I was calling a meeting for tomorrow morning to discuss our course of action.

I'll never forget that in our meeting, I took the chair, normally reserved for Rachael, that was at the head of the conference room table and began going around the table confirming with each of our department heads; I ensured we had our graphics packages prepared for all scenarios, asked our Senior Engineers if our satellite test had been completed, discussed details with our Director of Operations, requested all Promos were completed and given to Master Control, and of course confirming and answering any questions my staff may have had to ensure we were all prepared. Even at one point, Philip Garvin, was walking by and noticed that all of the Department Heads were in the conference room as I was running this meeting and popped his head in and said, "It looks like this may be important, should I be joining this meeting?" After briefly telling him what it was about even telling him that he's welcome to join us, he decided that it was under control and quickly left. Once again, this simple gesture demonstrated how much trust and faith Philip had in myself as both a professional and as someone to lead such a meeting.

I'll never forget, however, that while conducting this meeting, at the end of the table Dan Farley our head of the Promos Department was sitting there and smiling, and it's as though I could tell what he was thinking. I felt as though he was thinking, 'One day Troy, when Rachael decides to retire or is promoted, you will be taking that chair and fully running the Programming Department,' but all I could do was smile back thinking, 'wow no one has any idea that in just a matter of months I'll be giving my notice, resigning from my career.' The reason I mention this story is because it just goes to show how well Rachael prepared me throughout the years and how much I learned from her. I give her full credit for SOOO very much of the development of my work ethic and all of the professional organizational skills she taught me.

I remember how some (unnamed individuals that no longer are with the company) would ask me, how I could work for Rachael? Because, they thought she was very demanding like a pit bull. I told them easy. It's because; one, we have worked together for more than a decade and two, she is the driving force of our network to keep us on-air and while she can be demanding that is a good thing, because she knows how to lead and motivate others by setting a high-standard for herself she in turn expects the same in our own department. I couldn't agree more, and as I continue to both be offered and seek out entrepreneurial ventures I've learned to continue to hold myself to a high-standard as well as doing the same toward others, whether that be business partners or business ventures.

This is important, because while I've worked with other businesses and partners throughout my entrepreneurial ventures, one thing I've learned from her is to reward your staff and NOT to stifle other's motivation. There are times you need to crack the whip and there are times that you need to be a coach. This can be a difficult challenge to balance for many people, especially business owners. I know that when my former business partner was both stealing money from myself and our other employer, while at the same time tearing down my own motivation, it made me realize how completely opposite he was from Rachael and gave me more respect for her and that I needed to move on from this business partnership.

Therefore, in closing, because otherwise I will keep writing more and more about Rachael and I need to get going on my day, as I'm still both a traveler and an aspiring entrepreneur that has clients waiting on me even though I've began this morning before the sun came up! I just want to continue to thank Philip, Mark, and Rachael once more for all of the amazing and wonderful qualities they have taught me and close with a quote from John F. Kennedy, "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."

9 BASIC NFL FORMATIONS

The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. – Vince Lombardi

As the AFC and NFC Championships for the NFL are quickly approaching, I've recently gained a new client that I was expecting to do more business consulting work with, but as life always surprises you, this particular CEO is more interested in learning and understanding American Football! Yes, for sports fanatics–this is one of the ultimate paid jobs in a sense, talking my all-time favorite sport! I already knew my friends used to despise me when I was being paid to watch television for years as the Quality Control Specialist for HDNet. Yes, that's also a real PAID job, to watch television! However, it's not nearly as exciting, fun, or interesting as you may imagine all of the time. You aren't watching television leisurely, but in an extremely technical format. I will share a secret though. From 2001-2004, with the inaugural inception of HDNet, the first all-high-definition #HDTV television network in the United States, I had watched more HD programming than any other person in America! I had QC'd every one of HDNet's programs before they went to broadcast or hit air, such classics as; Get Out!, Art Mann Presents, HDNet World Report, Dan Rather Reports, Inside MMA (before we began broadcasting this weekly sports show live from our LA studio), and some of our older and more obscure shows such as Square Pegs, Eye for an Eye with host Kato Kaelin, whom I randomly met at the high-limit blackjack table at the Rio Casino in Las Vegas where he was with his producer and as soon as I mentioned I worked for HDNet they began chatting my ear off about the show and couldn't believe I was the person that not only watched every one of their, hmmm hmmm, incredible shows, but I also had the responsibility upon approving the QC of their show and by doing thus, I held in my hands the ability of approving or rejecting their show for technical or content issues and therefore this went through our in-house legal department and accounting that would release payment for their final product or program production costs. At times I was often paid–less just say an amount per hour for overtime that was probably anger most individuals–for QC'ing or watching every single episode of Prison Break, Star Trek Enterprise, Arrested Development (even the episodes that never aired on FOX and before Netflix chose to produce a fourth season), Smallville, and many, MANY, MANY other series!

But once again I have digressed, as I was mentioning how to explain some of the most common American Football formations. Growing up in one of the–if not THE greatest football city in America, Denver, you KNOW I had to throw that in there–I used to spend countless hours talking #DenverBroncos football with my friends and especially my brothers, Mike and Dave. We would analyze every detail of the game, trades, and of course how frustrated this team we often shared a love/hate relationship with. However, I feel that this is true of any eccentric sports fan of a specific team. I found this great article by Howard Cosmell, however, when I went to try and print this the format was not so friendly, plus I will be recreating my own graphics below of the various formations, but I wanted to of course, as usual, to give full credit to others when using their material by reformatting it for easier print, so with that said please check out his website. *All writing below is the FULL credit of Howard Cosmell AND I will be updating the below with better graphics soon.

You’re probably a macho guy (or a really cool chick) who knows football inside and out. But just to make sure we’re on the same page here, let’s run through some of the basic rules of football formations before we have a look at the formations themselves.

Offensive Positioning
There must be 11 total players. Of these, 6 positions are always the same. They are the five players make up the offensive line (OL)—1 center (C), 2 guards (G), 2 tackles (T)—plus 1 quarterback (QB).

The other 5 positions can be any combination of the remaining positions: 0-3 tight ends (TE), 0-5 wide receivers (WR), and 0-3 backs (FB/HB).

For any given play, there must be at least 7 players on the line of scrimmage—the 5 on the OL, plus at least 2 more. These two can be either TEs or WRs. A team can place more players on the line of scrimmage, but the rule is that only the two players on the ends are eligible receivers. So, most often, to maximize the number of eligible receivers, teams place the minimum 7 players up front, leaving 4 in the backfield.
These are the possibilities a coach has to work with when choosing how his team lines up on
offense.

Defensive Positioning
Obviously, there are also 11 total players on the defensive side of the ball. However, unlike offensive formations, in the NFL there are no rules regulating where defensive players must be positioned (as long as they are on their side of the line of scrimmage). They can be in “the box,” which is just an area within 5 yards of the ball and the line of scrimmage, or in the “secondary,” which is anywhere else. And after the snap, any player can go anywhere and do anything. Thus, coaches have a lot of leeway in drawing up defensive formations.

Still, there are 3 basic types of defensive positions: defensive linemen (DL), who line up right across from the OL in the box; linebackers (LB), who are positioned behind the DL, but still in the box; and defensive backs (DB), who are positioned in the secondary.

Players on the DL are called defensive ends (DE) if they are on the ends of the line and defensive tackles (DT) if they are in the middle. Often, if there is an odd number of tackles (i.e., 1 or 3), the middle/only tackle lined up over the ball is called a nose tackle (NT).
LBs are either strong (SLB), middle (MLB), or weak (WLB), depending on where they are relative to the offensive formation—if a linebacker is lined up opposite the offensive team’s TE, he is the SLB.

Players in the secondary are either cornerbacks (CB), who cover WRs, or safeties, who defend against the run and pass. A player is a strong safety (SS) if lined up on the same side as a TE or a free safety (FS) if free to roam wherever he is needed.

Now, let’s look at 9 football formations every man should know.

I-FORMATION (Offense)
The I formation is a “traditional” modern offensive formation that gets its name from the I-shaped alignment of the QB, FB and HB. Using 2 backs and, typically, 2 WRs and 1 TE, this formation is conducive to both running and passing plays. When the latter is chosen, the back without the ball—usually the FB—will block for the back with the ball. The I Formation isn’t all that common in the NFL today, as the pro set formation (#7 below) can accomplish pretty much the same thing. However, the I formation is still sometimes used for play-action passes or short yardage running situations. (Source)
Picture
PRO SET FORMATION (Offense)
The pro set formation is another “traditional” modern offensive formation. Like the I formation, the pro set is a balanced formation that usually features 2 backs, 2 WRs, and a TE. The main difference between the pro set and the I is simply that the two backs are on either side of the quarterback. Thus there is a bit of a tradeoff when using the pro set: you lose the blocking of the FB in the I formation, but you gain some uncertainty, as the defense doesn’t know which side of center the ball will go to. (Source)
Picture
SHOTGUN FORMATION (Offense)
You have a shotgun formation any time the QB lines up about 5 yards behind the center and receives a snap rather than a handoff from the C. Typically, this formation uses only 1 back with 3 WRs and 1 TE, although any variation of players in the backfield is possible. The advantage of the QB’s position on this formation is that he can see the defensive alignment more clearly and has more time to throw the ball. Teams with excellent QBs and an aggressive passing game—like Indianapolis and New England—have used the shotgun as their standard offensive formation in recent years. (Source)
Picture
SPREAD FORMATION (Offense)
The spread formation is a particularly aggressive variant of the single set back formation (which is just like the standard shotgun formation, only the QB lines up immediately behind the C). Where the spread formation differs from the standard single set back is in its use of 4 WRs and 0 TEs. The idea is that this formation spreads out the defense, creating more space. Though typically used for passing plays, the spread formation can also occasionally creates big holes in the DL for effective runs. Also, it’s more common in college than the NFL. (Source)

4-3 DEFENSE (Basic)
Picture
4-3 DEFENSE (Strong Side Shift)
The 4-3 defense is the most common base defensive formation in the NFL. With 4 defensive linemen, 3 LBs, and 4 players in the secondary, it is just about as balanced a defensive alignment as there can be. It is also versatile in that LBs can shift to the strong or weak sides, depending on the type of play they anticipate from the offensive team. (Source)
Picture
3-4 DEFENSE
The 3-4 defense is the other basic defensive formation, along with the 4-3. The 3-4 basically takes one of the DLs away from the 4-3 and adds a fourth LB, still leaving 4 in the secondary. While the 4-3 is more common in the NFL today because it is often stronger against the run, teams with exceptionally quick LBs might choose the 3-4 because it can offer a bit more versatility. (Source)
Picture
NICKEL DEFENSE
The nickel formation is any formation that has 5 players in the secondary instead of 4. (Get it? 5 cents in a nickel, 5 players in the secondary?) Basically, to better defend against a passing formation put in place by the offensive team, the defensive team sacrifices either a DL or a LB in favor of either an additional CB or safety. The additional defender is called a “nickelback.” The 4-2-5 nickel formation is like a 4-3 defense, only 1 LB becomes a third CB. On the other hand, the 3-5-3 nickel is like a 3-4 defense, only 1 LB becomes a third safety. (Source)
Picture
DIME DEFENSE
The dime defense is typically used against the most aggressive offensive passing formations. Whereas the nickel defense adds 1 more defender to the secondary (called a nickelback), the dime defense adds 2, bringing the grand total to 6. Just as two nickels equals one dime, two nickelbacks make a dime formation. Most often, what this all adds up to is 4 DLs, 1 LB, 4 CBs, and 2 safeties. But theoretically you there could be 3 DLs, 2 LBs, 3 CBs and 3 safeties. All that matters is that there are 6 in the secondary to defend against desperation passing plays. (Source)
Picture
GOAL LINE DEFENSE
The offensive and defensive versions of the goal line formation are basically the same: when the ball is within a few yards of the end zone, both teams will forget about the secondary and cram the box with as many bodies as possible. Offensively, this means 0 WRs with 3 TEs and 2 backs (plus the 5-man OL and the QB, making 11). Defensively, this means 0 safeties with a 5-man DL, 4 LBs and 2 CBs. (Source)

5 METHODS TO ACHIEVE FINANCIAL FREEDOM

1/22/2016

I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. – Michael Jordan

Thursday, January 21, 2016 (DAY 1,416)
"The first rule of personal finance is that it's not personal and it's not financial. It's about your ability to make ten changes and not get too depressed over it." This is an excellent quote by
James Altucher, an American hedge fund manager, entrepreneur, bestselling author, and podcaster. He has founded or cofounded more than 20 companies, including Reset Inc. and StockPickr and says he failed at 17 of them (*source: Wikipedia). During my own time of reflecting back upon my homecoming visit to Denver, Colorado in July of 2015, the most frequently asked question I received while I was making my rounds visiting family, friends, and even a brief visit back to my old office at HDNet, which is now AXStv, I was asked if I was back permanently, especially by several colleagues asked if I might be coming back to my old professional career in broadcasting. Without hesitation, I always seemed to smile and say, "not at this point." I think people–including myself–are still highly intrigued, if not baffled, at how I could possibly afford to have been and to continue to be traveling the world for almost four-years, while not being a bazillionaire! Well, to be honest, that's a relatively easy answer to me. I've developed a pretty simple five-step method, at least in my opinion, which I know not everyone has the ability or current situation to follow, but hopefully this can help to take that first step in whatever stage your financial life may be at the moment.

1. I'VE LEARNED TO LIVE AS A MINIMALIST
Yes, I've had the fancy new cars, the expensive weekend getaways where tossing out even a few thousand dollars didn't seem like a dent to my budget, and of course, I still own my wicked awesome four-bedroom three-bathroom place, which is available for rent beginning in March 2016. However, I would have to say that while I enjoyed and still enjoying occasional luxuries, living with less brings much fewer headaches because I have less to maintain (i.e. an automobile, auto and health insurance, expensive cell phone plans, monthly internet, and of course storage for additional material possessions, and etc) This is not to say that I still don't  indulge in some luxury items such as purchasing the new iPhone6 last summer, a newer Macbook Air, some other goodies inlcluding treating myself and friends to awesome dinners here in Seoul, because to me, being a minimalist also allows you to not only save money instead of purchasing MORE material items that you DON'T NEED but YOU WANT–again a big life lesson in NEED vs. WANT–but also, I feel it's important in sharing the abundance of the blessings your receive with others while applying self-discipline through budgeting and personal savings. The simple formula is:

1) Evaluate your daily, weekly, month expenses by tracking them NOW
2) Pretty simple, you spend LESS, than this/these amounts
3) If you are above these amounts on ANY level–of course unexpected variables occur often, which can be hard to account for–however, that's why you should be keeping certain funds liquid in savings
4) MAKE SACRIFICES!

MY ADVICE:
Begin ditching ALL unnecessary costs, immediately! Cut all monthly service fees, such as; gym memberships, cable, satellite, and/or any other paid entertainment services (i.e. Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc), also review what electronics are sucking your vampire energy dollars out of your pocket. I personally wasn't sure about how effective the whole "vampire energy" was actually costing me, until I tried it at my place by unplugging my microwave, stove because of the clock, all other lamps, etc and in just one month I carefully gauged my expenses and was able to shave off $20 from my energy bill. I know that may not seem like much to you, but imagine how much you can be saving if you truly wanted too. Sure, it can be inconvenient for some families to do this, but if you want to regain your financial freedom think about all the small sacrifices and small expenses you make each month, week, or day. Even when I was working, my friends often wondered how I always seemed to have money to do things, and I told them that it wasn't the large expenses that start dwindling down your checking account, it's your small tiny expenses here and there. Cooking at home and bringing my lunch to work started saving me a lot, and even during times of social occasions I would try and eat before meeting up with friends. I know again some people might be shaking their heads thinking, "wow, what a hobo-cheapskate," but, I never refused to purchase something at restaurants or tip a proper amounts, I just limited my spending habits and guess what, I'm not drowning in debt! Also, start selling unused items on Craigslist and eBay. Pay down high-interest credit cards or loans as any financial adviser would tell you. The key word is making sacrifices!
Picture
2. FINDING A GREAT BALANCE BETWEEN WORK AND TRAVEL
I've found that operating my own businesses brings both a greater sense of happiness knowing that I'm doing something that I am truly passionate about and I have an abundance of freedom with my time and schedule. I mean if you could set your own work schedule, select your own clients, all while living in a first world country–that also happens to be the 9th most expensive city in the world to live–yet find a way to make it affordable, would you be so quick to return to the United States working for someone else at 40-hours or more per week, fighting the daily traffic grind, having limited vacation time, high monthly living costs, and again LIMITED VACATION TIME?

Yes, this lifestyle has it's ups and downs and there are plenty of sacrifices that are made, such as communal living, owning limited material or clothing selections/choices, staying up with trends, etc but to me, the trade-offs well outweigh these so-called advantages of being successful or keeping up with the Joneses. I used to care about brands and all that, and I'm not judging and saying it's wrong by any means, but there's a large difference to those that CAN afford certain luxuries and those that WANT to appear to own these items that in the words of Fight Club, "end up owning you!"

I mean when I am able to earn my ENTIRE monthly living expenses in just one or two days of operating my own businesses (roughly $300-$450), and from thereon out I'm saving roughly 88% of my additional earnings after splurging on treating myself to things like weekly acupuncture treatments, less than $20 per visit, dinners, movies, drinks with friends, etc. Yes, if you were to compare my previous salary to my current one, of course the NUMBERS appear to be daunting, but, when I have chances to travel or vacation up to four or even as high as six months out of the year, live without health insurance yet still have access to some of the world's best doctors for less than what most people will spend on a co-pay with the best U.S. health insurance, and often work only part-time style hours from time-to-time, you tell me what you would do?

If I truly chose to, I could discontinue communal living and still be saving, it would just be quite a bit less, so therefore, my priority is saving and keeping my funds liquid or investing as opposed to feeling that I NEED to have my own private apartment in Seoul.

MY ADVICE:
Truly evaluate whatever your current system is, and see where you can make adjustments. I know that change is never easy for many people, but once you become accustomed to it, you will be surprised at how easy it can be. Especially knowing that each night I go to bed without worrying about if I will have enough money to pay bills or stressing over what would happen if I lost my job. Financial freedom to me, is one of the most liberating feelings, PERIOD!

3. I'LL ADMIT I AM AN ENIGMA
Most of those closest to me will certainly tell you that I am a complete enigma. I mean I feel that first of all, I've always had a very independent and entrepreneurial spirit. I remember at the age of 13 I would read through the classified section of the newspaper–yes, for Millennials this is called paper and we received information from it and not electronic devices–and I would make phone calls trying to get a job because I wanted to be earning my own income! This of course didn't really pan out thanks in part to the U.S. Department of Labor laws concern child labor, again not a bad thing. When I did gain my first job as a dishwasher at a Shari's Restaurant at the age of 15, the company later found out that they were breaking the Child Labor Laws allowing me to work past specific hours in the evening on school nights and therefore I was reduced to be allowed to work one day per week. My persistence continued years later when I was 18-years-old and began working at a call center for Dish Network–unbeknownst to me that broadcast television would be my career path, but not in a cubicle call center. This was the ONLY job I have ever just walked out on! The reason is quite hilarious and yet ridiculous all at once. If you have ever seen the Mike Judge indy-classic Office Space, you know the scene when the character Peter tells the Bobs that he has eight different bosses. Well, yup that was sorta my situation. The reason I walked out you asked? Well, at these very structured corporate companies that are an exact carbon-copy of the film Office Space. We weren't employees, but "team members." We didn't have a supervisor or a boss, but a "Team Leader." C'mon corporate HR, this is a complete joke and we all know it. Well, our "team" had a specific schedule of when we would come in and work of course, and since I was not only working full time but began my first semester at college and was paying for this myself, in order to make both schedules work I placed a request that WAS APPROVED by management that allowed me to come into work one-hour earlier than my "team" and thus allowed me to leave one-hour earlier so I could make it to my evening classes. Well, EVERY morning for two weeks straight, I would come in an hour early–on time, because I have never been late to ANY job–and would plug my headset in and begin taking customer calls. Well, EVERY single morning I would have at least five to 10 people–seriously–that were other "team leaders" come over to me in the middle of a call and unplug my headset! This bothered me of course for several reasons, but the largest was because every moment my headset was NOT plugged in was like clocking out and therefore I was not being paid. I had to go through explaining, once again five or more times EVERY morning and thus was often not receiving pay for nearly 15-to-30-minutes. Finally, after two weeks of this constant–what I would equate it to is "work harassment" and these "team leaders" having nothing better to do, I finally just threw my headset down and walked out! I felt that this was ridiculous as I am TRYING to do my job and to be harassed every morning I also felt this company no longer deserved any notice of my departure and found it extremely humorous years later when HDNet became part of Dish Network's HD television package that they were now a client of MINE! Wicka-wicka, how the tables have turned! The lesson I learned here was that, situations in life occur for a reason and how most people refer to it as karma or whatever, that future opportunities will arise and if this company would have treated me better I have always had a strong level of loyalty, but they shot themselves in the foot, in my opinion. Yes, CEO Charlie Ergen, your corporate structure is a laughing stock and while I don't take pleasure in individuals losing their jobs of course, when your business management model just outright sucks, you end up losing potentially valuable asset employees. Thank you again Mark Cuban and Philip Garvin for helping me to achieve my potential, as well as my business mentor Rachael Weaver, whom is now the General Manager of HDNet Movies. THIS is how a company should be operated successfully and how employees should be treated through encouraging development of their talents, not stifling them because of an ignorant failing model.

MY ADVICE:
I know most people may not be the uncanny individuals of fortunate situations such as myself, but I also didn't just sit back and wait for things to come to me. For example, back in 2000 after walking out of Dish Network, I told friends that I was tired of working service industry or hourly-waged jobs that had little opportunities, but I was actively seeking a career path that I could hopefully begin at an entry level position and work my way up. Therefore, I began applying on Monster.com for companies such as Level 3 Communications, Charles Schwab, Law Firms, Tech Companies, etc. I would apply for senior positions, but I clearly stated on my resume that I was seeking any entry level position, because I understood that I only had a high school diploma and was barely into my first few months of college. However, it was through this persistence that I applied for a Senior Accounting Position with Colorado Studios and was brought in for an interview at the ripe young age of 18 where I was told that the company is small and had an entry level position that was not listed because they didn't want to spend the money to advertise for this. My second interview was with the CEO, Philip Garvin and he asked me as we sat in the conference room where I saw myself in five-years? I answered him honestly, and told him I had no idea since I had just graduated from high school and was currently taking courses at community college in the evening at the moment. He said he was willing to give me a shot, and that opportunity blossomed into a 12-year career that took me from being the runner or production assistant to Master Control Engineer to Quality Control Specialist and finally to the Program Manager of a national television network before I was even 25-years-old. But once again, I DID NOT WAIT for opportunities to come falling on my lap, but I ACTIVELY sought them out. One thing one of my best friends Andrea and I would always be horrifically annoyed by was when others would constantly complain about their current situation, whether that was their job, boyfriend/girlfriend, living situation, income, etc but never did anything to try and change the situation. We always would say, either start doing something to change your current situation or shut up! Because, if you have no drive to change your current situation then you will continue to stay within the confines of it for weeks, months, years, possibly the rest of your life!

MY ADVICE:
Take risks! I'm not saying you need to do something overly dramatic like quitting your job or packing up and moving with high-hopes to another part of the city or country, but to take risks by making changes in a SMART way! If you are not satisfied with your current salary put together LOGICAL reasons to justify a pay raise. If you want a job change, before quitting, start actively looking and networking with other business professionals. Use ALL of your resources available to you, including that simple thing we are using now called the Internet! The worst thing that can happen is you are in the same place you currently are, but at least you have tried by TAKING A RISK!

4. INVESTING BOTH IN THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE
I think one of the best overall investments I made came before I was even legally old enough to buy alcohol by purchasing my house in 2002. Even after the 2008 housing market crash, Colorado was one of the first states to recover from this fact and is still one of the strongest real estate markets. It also doesn't hurt that when the legalization of cannabis was passed in 2012, there has been an enormous surge in the housing and rental market in the Mile High City. I also continue to seek out new business ventures, and have been offered several opportunities, but I feel I am always very analytical in my forward business thinking and have turned down more partnerships in the past year than I feel most people receive throughout their life. I've learned that money is a necessity in life, however, I've learned that it is no longer my absolute priority, and–I feel–when you you can accept this attitude towards money by learning to have a strong level of self-discipline in savings, financial freedom often finds you! I'm not saying all of these things will fall in your lap, as you may think they did for me, but no. I worked hard for each and every business I have started and every single one has been profitable within a seven-day period. I mean right now, it's January 21, 2016 as I write this entry catching up on my blogging, and I went to bed last night at 12:15am and was up NATURALLY at 3:45am and began working on my business. I didn't do this because I feel that it's necessary, but because I willingly just woke up and knew I could be productive. It's funny how when you start working for yourself your level of motivation and drive becomes a whole new entity. I'm also not saying that I haven't felt burned out or struggled with motivation, but it's just a different type.

MY ADVICE:
Smart investments. There's a reason pyramid schemes, get-rich-quick, and all those other garbage things never work. There's also a reason why you don't see successful individuals lining up to buy Power Ball tickets. C'mon man! You that lump three feet above your butt and realize that hard work, determination, perseverance, and dedication are the keys to being smart by investing in yourself now and for the future. After reading and hearing all of the depressing stories of people that have majored in debt, I just can't stop and figure out why on earth would you take out all those loans and not realize that you won't have to pay them back at some point WITH interest! I didn't avoid this pitfall either, but I certainly considered my options when I thought about possibly going back to grad school for a law degree, until I did my research and realized it would cost roughly $150,000! Through my travels, I've found that there are several different ways to obtain a Master's Degree for half the cost, if not ENTIRELY FREE! I understand it may not carry the weight of a U.S. Masters, but do you want to be paying back loans well into your 80s, knowing you will NEVER have a chance to enjoy the golden years of retirement?! Even as I just celebrated my birthday and am closer to reaching my mid-30s, I've already began preparing for where I may be retiring in the future and it's certainly not the United States in all honesty, unless my continued business ventures take me back there for some SPECIFIC reason. I've learned that I can retire on a fraction of what most people would, while not only losing any of the perks that the so-called 'well-off retirees enjoy,' but I would be living retirement in a MORE comfortable manner with more benefits including the ability to fly back and forth around the world if need be to see family. Save and invest WISELY!
Picture
5. STILL FINDING WAYS TO REWARD MYSELF THROUGH TRAVEL
Finding success in life still requires hard work, and in doing so, you still need to reward and treat yourself. Therefore, in less than two weeks I'll be taking a three-week vacation to visit some warm beaches to, as Koreans say, "take a rest." Also in 2016, I will be taking another two weeks off from running my businesses when my best friend from Colorado comes to visit me in Seoul as well as possible future trips back to the United States in the Summer and hopefully finally being able to cross visiting the sixth continent of my travels–Africa!

MY ADVICE:
Even as you begin taking steps, even baby steps, towards achieving financial freedom to travel or just have more time to do the things you would like to be doing, set goals and as you reach them, pause to reward yourself, because this will help you to stay focused and motivated. It's the old carrot and the stick mindset! Be realistic about what your carrot and your stick is by taking time to analyze and think before just rushing into decisions. Once again, I did NOT hate my job or life whatsoever before leaving, it was actually one of the hardest things to walk away from WILLINGLY, but nearly four-years later, I've grown in ways I could never have done without taking the risk of leaving behind what was comfortable and secure.

Therefore, in conclusion, based upon these five steps, I think that almost anyone can achieve long-term budget travel or financial freedom IF you are willing to make sacrifices, find your areas of weakness, and WORK HARD to be self-disciplined through patience and perseverance.
