To be successful you have to be selfish, or else you never achieve. And once you get to your highest level, then you have to be unselfish. Stay reachable. Stay in touch. Don't isolate. – Michael Jordan

Be honest, we ALL have annoyances, pet peeves, things that just irritate us beyond words! Well, I thought I'd share a 10 things that I find annoying about other people, primarily in the sense that this is something they can change, yet refuse to do so, whether they are stubborn or fail to stop and take even a brief moment to view the situation from the other person's perspective or viewpoint. I will be the first to admit that I am not perfect as well, but I try to seek ways to change my attitude on a daily basis, however to do this, it is a two-way street, and when the other party or person(s) refuse to change their attitude, this is–whether you agree with it or not–I tend to become more recluse and it changes my entire outlook on that person(s). Carl Jung made a great point, "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves."
10. EXCESSIVE SMARTPHONE USE IN SOCIAL SETTINGS
I completely understand that smartphones have now become completely integrated into our society, BUT, with this new addition of technology there are levels of etiquette that should be considered. Just as I mention regarding purchases there is: want vs need–to me–and this is the same with smartphone use, whether in 1:1 or social settings. It's understandable that sometimes there is an importance to respond, but be considerate.
8. UNMOTIVATED AND LAZY
INDIVIDUALS
Typically I am a very motivated individual, BUT, I've had those around me unfortunately that have stolen this valuable asset from me, for example Marc Noonan, however, I think that this can best be said in a quote: "Free yourself from negative people. Spend time with nice people who are smart, driven and like-minded. Relationships should help you, not hurt you. Surround yourself with people who reflect the person you want to be. Choose friends who you are proud to know, people you admire, who love and respect you – people who make your day a little brighter simply by being in it. Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you. When you free yourself from negative people, you free yourself to be YOU – and being YOU is the only way to truly live." Choose to be an INDIVIDUAL!
6. JUDGMENTAL AND/OR CLOSED-MINDED PEOPLE
This continues on from #5 of making assumptions and the dangers that it can create, especially long-term. You never know HOW or WHAT could or can happen, based upon your response, because this is one thing YOU CAN CONTROL!
4. PERPETUAL AVOIDERS
It is completely understandable that from time-to-time you may need solitude or another person(s) when situations in life occur, however, to be a person that has a track record of perpetually avoiding a situation, not only magnifies and draws it out, but when or if they finally do approach you, unfortunately it may be too late and this can cost you again in various ways.
2. FUNDAMENTALLY DECEPTIVE PEOPLE & EMPTY PROMISES
Once again I tend to try and evaluate–not judge, however, we are human and this is often a natural instinct–but I am very analytical and observant when making more important decisions, especially when I have the choice, such as business partners. I've learned from bad experiences and great ones, and this quote by Frank Outlaw (very cool last name by the way), he said, “Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions; watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become character; watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
Another great quote from Coach John Wooden, "Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are." |
9. INDECISIVE PEOPLE,
ALL THE TIME
I'm sure we've all been there with friends, family, coworkers, etc trying to decide upon a restaurant or activity and being indecisive is understandable, BUT, being indecisive all the time–to me–demonstrates a lack of confidence and a time-thief. Once again, my time is precious on some levels, therefore respect it and make a decision or offer a suggestion, but don't just shrug your shoulders about others' suggestions.
7. MAKING ASSUMPTIONS OR GOSSIP
Making assumptions and speculations can be both a positive quality and an extremely negative situation that can damage a person's reputation, especially when it's done through gossip and/or misunderstandings. The difference to me, is that there are various levels of confrontation that may need to be taken, however, if the other party (or individual(s) are unwilling to listen, whether due to stubbornness or trying to be the so-called 'alpha-individual,' by rejecting and failing to even consider the position of the other person–once again my personal opinion–is that they lack the ability for compromise and possibility being closed-minded, which can cost them a job, an opportunity, and many other various rewards. Therefore, KNOW THE FACTS, speak to the person before just taking the words of others.
5. LAZINESS WITH HAVING EXPECTATIONS
What drives me crazy is people that talk about making changes and set expectations–not on them, but you–and when you don't live up to them, whether you are aware of them or not (typically not) this is once again a character flaw.
3. LACK CONSIDERATION
Besides this being one of the most ridiculous and hilarious photos, I'm still surprised at the lack of consideration some people have for others through being selfish. Miscommunication is one thing, but to blatantly try to prove points through your actions through non-verbal communication demonstrates immaturity. For example, slamming doors or playing music loudly.
1. INCONSIDERATE ALERT SOUNDS
Oooh, have you ever been in a room or area where you have someone that is communicating with their phone and instead of being considerate by place it on silent or at the least the mode where it vibrates when notifications come in? I would imagine you have. This really irritates me, because not only is it often constant, BUT, to me it shows the level of respect or inconsideration people have for others. According to the Wall Street Journal, more than 70% of the population in Korea owns smartphones, and while I understand this has become a part of global society, when people fail to turn their phone notifications off or at the least on silent during important business situations, that again demonstrates their lack of respect and inability to be a professional, in my opinion, and just as #2 talks about actions speak louder than words, this is what I mean.
