ADVICE FOR KADS MOVING TO KOREA

Life is a series of collisions with the future; it is not the sum of what we have been, but what we yearn to be.
– Jose Ortega y Gasset

Monday, March 31, 2015 (DAY 1,121)
Besides being a global traveler that has spent time in both Europe and Australia–obviously much easier as both an American and Western cultural countries–but I have also had the privilege to have lived in 19 different countries throughout Central and South America, South East Asia, and more than a year in Korea. Another thing that I would like to mention is that I have lived and/or stayed in over 300 hostels or guest houses internationally, therefore, in some ways I feel as though I've become a bit of whether you want to use the term expert or seasoned-veteran when it comes to communal living, and as a KAD (Korean-Adoptee), the decision to move or even visit Korea as a KAD by coming to Korea is not only something that should be YOUR choice–without that of a family member's pressure or encouragement–but more importantly your decision to move here should be carefully considered. Throughout living in Korea, primarily in a guest house with other KADS, I have experienced a variety of KADs from around the world. Yes, some people are actually surprised to learn that South Korea has the largest number of children adopted internationally since the Korean War of the 1950s, but that on average between 5,000–6,000 KADs return to Korea each year, whether that be for short-term, longer-terms, or indefinite relocation. Therefore, as a KAD and based upon MY EXPERIENCE participating in several KAD programs in Korea as well as, obviously, meeting lots of KADS from all over the world, just as anything there has been both positive and negative experiences.

First of all, the reason I HIGHLY insist that family members and/or friends DO NOT encourage other adoptees to return to Korea–even for a short trip through an organized program–because this is NOT, let me repeat that NOT, a typical vacation-style trip to us, whether accompanied with family members/friends etc. Often, I have witnessed personally, the emotional struggle and even breakdown of individuals from all ages! Secondly, please DO NOT encourage KADs to begin the process of searching for their birth family! This is HIGHLY important and needs to be an individual decision, because you MUST be:

1) Emotionally prepared for the potential outcomes–yes some are positive but I have witness and again experienced several unfortunately that have been negative and this can be a crushing blow to a person's psyche and even push them off a very fragile edge they may already be on–with or without you knowing it or signs being shown.

2) Continue to remember that no matter whether you are a parent or sibling of a KAD, even myself having two sisters that are Korean adoptees, I have asked them if the have any interest in searching for their birth families or visiting Korea, and they are still undecided, and therefore, I will not continue to bring up that subject.

Some of the things that I have witnessed–again KADs from 18-years-old as old as 40s–plus, and my two pieces of advice are: if you don't drink or do certain things at home, why on earth do you feel the need to do it, just because you are in Korea. For example, yes, Korea has a relative negative stigma as a so-called 'drinking culture' and uncanny as it may sound I've met several KADs–again of all ages–that tell me they never drink back in their home country, yet in Korea they are drinking as though they are a high school kid that got an older friend to buy them their first drink and of course they overindulge. This of course may be a coping–mechanism in my opinion, but it's something that I feel comes with the overall 'readiness' of returning to Korea upon your OWN–INDIVIDUAL decision without an external pressure or 'encouragement.'

And secondly, I know that when many KADs meet one-another, we often share the same story of growing up in predominantly Caucasian communities, therefore some of us have had limited contact with other KADS in our life, and of course we share this commonality with other KADS, BUT this does not mean that you need to be best friends with every adoptee you meet. I have been guilty of falling in to this preconception upon both my first one-month visit in October 2013 joining a small group of KADs as part of the Eastern Social Welfare Society (#ESWS) Home–to–Home Program, which was specific to an organized one-week trip of activities, which focused upon the fact that all nine of us were here to meet our birth families for the first time.

The advice I give to other KADs is; if you wouldn't hang out or spend time with this person without the knowledge of knowing they are a KAD, then why do you feel the need to continue to spend time or trust someone JUST BECAUSE of the fact that you both share this aspect of your past?

Finally, I do not want to discourage any KADs from participating or considering moving to Korea, but I think that these 15 suggestions may be things that you have hopefully already considered, or will be helpful suggestions in general to make moving abroad a more pleasant experience with ease! I know that I often stay very busy either with traveling or running and operating my own businesses, but please feel free to EMAIL ME, however I want to apologize in advance if I take quite a while in responding. This often may be due to issues that are not just due to a busy schedule, but can also be due to limited technologies in areas that I may be visiting through my travels. Also, if you haven't taken time to navigate a bit through my site I have created a LINKS PAGE FOR KADS, that may be helpful for you and/or others.
1. CULTURAL AWARENESS
Picture
If you haven't experienced any type of international travel, and Korea is your first experience, first of all, this is both good and bad;
THE BAD: Through my personal experience of global travel (35 different countries at this point, living abroad in 19 of them) as I mentioned of Western countries, not just English speaking countries, but Western ones, since most KADs were adopted and grew up in Western countries, in my opinion there is the largest difference as you hear between the East and West dichotomy. It's not just language but an entirely different mindset, cultural differences, etiquette, and social expectations.
THE GOOD: Korea, in my opinion is the SAFEST country I have traveled or lived in–even for a megacity such as Seoul, which is the world's second largest metropolitan area with over 25.6 million people, or a city that is twice the population density of New York City–and when I mean safe, I consider things such as; petty crime or theft (i.e. pickpocketing), sexual harassment or gender equality (yes, Korea like most of Asia is still a patriarch society in a lot of ways, but changes are occurring, however, keep this in mind as a feminist or strong female).
2. SHORT VISITS ARE NOT TRUE INDICATORS OF BEING A KAD LIVING IN KOREA
Picture
All too often KADs return to Korea for the first time as part of an organized group (small or large) and this is a great experience, HOWEVER, this is not a true indication of what it is truly like living in Korea as a gyopo (교포), a term that some feel is very negative and others just embrace. I myself have been guilty of this same sort of ignorance. My first trip was a one-month trip, but was primarily focused upon the one-week organized Home to Home program in 2013 through Eastern Social Welfare Society (#ESWS), and upon returning in April 2014 and deciding to live in Korea for an indefinite amount of time both to experience more of where I came from and also as a traveler this is one country I have the opportunity to work legally after obtaining my F4 Visa status.

I would like to also mention that above ANYTHING, in Korea, like most Asian countries it all about respect! Therefore, speaking loudly as Americans often are known for can be seen as extremely rude plus many other levels of etiquette. As I said, organized tours with other KADs are not a true indication of living in Korea as a KAD, because as sad as it may sound we are treated like SECOND-CLASS citizens! Yes, you look Korea, you have Korean pride and often a strong bond to this country as a KAD–this is normal and natural and the commonality that ties us all together as KADs regardless of where we grew up in the world–however please keep in mind that YOUR actions affect those of us KADs that are living in Korea, and because Korea is still very much a homogeneous society, often the only or first interactions that other Koreans may have with KADs can be negative and thereby stereotyping us as an entire group! So PLEASE be aware of this fact, because at some point in your life you may want to return whether for future short-term stays, long-term, or indefinite, and thereby in doing so YOUR previous actions have consequences or repercussions either positive or negative.

When I say treatment like second-class citizens, for example my roommate Jacob that has lived in Korea continuously for nearly or more than two-years explained it as, "if a white person tries to speak Korean other Koreans will stand around and encourage and clap like trained seals would, but if a KAD does the same, you're looked at as if you are mentally challenged (the non PC version, retarded) because of how you look, you are thereby EXPECTED to understand cultural etiquette, customs, and of course the language. And, even when you try and speak Korean, obviously you have an accent, and they look at you as to why this is the case and question you! Plus as much as KADs will continue to say 'I'm Korean' which is true, to most Koreans you are still viewed as a foreigner, PERIOD.
3. GUEST HOUSE LIVING
Picture
If you have lived with roommates, that's already a plus, but if you choose to take advantage of the various guest houses that are established through organizations specifically for KADs you are most likely going to be sleeping in a bunk bed, sharing a room with other people. This can obviously cause friction and be a complete change in your previous living environment and expectation. Therefore, SIMPLE, have a good strong mental attitude of what COMMUNAL LIVING is like, and do simple things; clean up after yourself, wash and put away your dishes, ask your roommates about their schedule when taking turns using the bathroom for showers, because again many of us that are living here are also working or studying and we have a schedule, and often an annoyance to us can be when other KADs come for a visit and disrespect that we live here on a more long-term or permanent basis! So again in order to gain respect you MUST also give it! Besides the cultural differences with Korean nationals, you also have the added cultural differences and levels of expectations with other KADs you may be sharing a room or living environment with, so just be aware of these things and they will help you NOT to be ostracized in your guest house. I wrote another blog a while back labeled '5 Suggestions for Adjusting to Hostel Life."
4. DO YOUR RESEARCH
Picture
Do you r research before just deciding to move here: things to consider are banking issues (what will your bank do back in your home country if your card becomes lost, stolen, or the number compromised), medical check-ups or if you take prescription medication taking a doctors note to a pharmacy in Korea may or may not be honored, figure out transportation (from your home country as well as from the airport to wherever your final destination, which is normally Seoul), and etc. and etc.
5. F4 VISA PROCESS
Picture
Picture
There are several organizations that can assist you with this, which I tried to utilize G.O.A.L. (Global Overseas Adoption Link), however my personal experience with them was HORRIBLE as they made empty promises, wasted a month of my time, continued to harass me in paying for their membership fee, and more. Therefore I did this on my own and had it completed in less than 3-hours and it took about 3-weeks to process through the Seoul Immigration Office aka Korean Government of course. I have mixed feelings about the organizations 'paid memberships.' Yes, of course I understand most are non-profit, but in my personal opinion the level of support and how funds are often used can be a question of ethics. Not specifically promoting one organization over another, but I did have a lot of FREE assistance with Eastern Social Welfare Society (#ESWS)
6. BANKING AND FINANCES
Picture
Very simple, GO INTO your nearest bank location and speak with a personal banker notifying them of your plan to move aboard. They should have suggestions and answers to your financial questions. For example a a veteran global backpacker, I actually interviewed banks to find the best one to support me on an international level and one question I proposed to them–again I understand is different knowing you would be coming to Korea, but again it's an example–was asking, "Select THE MOST difficult place on the entire planet. I need a new bank card! How long will it take to receive it? What will YOU as MY bank do in the meantime as I wait for a new card to arrive? And, what are the overall fees including if you were to have the option of an international wire transfer such as with Western Union, WHO incurs the fees?
7. DOCUMENTS
Picture
Picture
Once again moving abroad you may need original documents, BUT at the very least you will want digital files that are encrypted. Some of these documents for Korea, especially those seeking to teach English either through public or private schools as well as private English academies aka Hagwons (학원) are; apostilled documents (including a FBI criminal background check hard copy), possibly official University transcripts and/or original University diploma, medical records (World Health Organization Yellow Book), and various others potentially. Again, going back to doing your own research.
8. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Picture
Both with having your finances in order, it's also important to have a contingency plan in case of things such as; do you have the proper savings to return home on an expensive flight, in case of a sudden serious family illness or death? Do you have a previous professional career you can return to or fall back upon? If you were just to become overwhelmed with homesickness or loneliness and even though your plan was to move to Korea for given period of time and you want to return early, again WHAT is your contingency plan(s)?
9. YOUR PURPOSE
Picture
I think this is one of the most important questions. I've asked several KADs, so WHY did you decide to return to Korea, especially for the first time? And all too often people do not have an answer to this question. I think before making such a big decision you should really take time to evaluate and even discuss with close family or a mentor(s) about this relatively big decision? Remember it's not just a trip, but you are considering MOVING ABROAD!
10. MANAGING EXPECTATIONS
Picture
Sadly, many of the wonderful social workers at both Eastern Social Welfare Society in the Post Adoption Services office are not only awfully understaffed, there are only five or six social or case workers, and they receive hundreds if not thousands of requests a year from KADs from all over the world, thus the reason it often takes years to locate your birth family. Also, having an opportunity to come back to Korea and both volunteer with #ESWS and build a relationship with the social workers here, they often tell me of HORRIBLE stories of KADs that email them with enormous expectations that turn to verbal or written abuse and often brings them to tears! SO again BE RESPECTFUL people! These understaffed, overworked, and underpaid individuals are here for us as KADs so realize that, PLEASE!
11. PHONE AND COMMUNICATION
Picture
This is getting easier as more of the newer phones allow for universal or global use, meaning no longer limited to GSM or CDMA style networks, but capabilities of both and understanding the differences of global communication systems. This can determine whether that older or brand new iPhone, Samsung, etc will actually work in Korea. Again DO YOUR RESEARCH!
12. EDUCATION AND SKILLS
Picture
Picture
If you are from a native English speaking country AND you have completed your Bachelor's degree you have both an opportunity to work as a Private 1:1 English Tutor or gain employment with a school in Korea. BUT, before just showing up you need to again DO YOUR RESEARCH! What documents are required? What are the various types of salaries and benefits being offered? Is this a public or private school or again a Hagwon? Here is an example of how Hagwons can sometimes be a bad decision, and others. This is not like your home country where you can easily just get a job part time or full time with or without completing your higher education. The average LEGAL foreigner jobs pay between ₩5,000–₩6,000 ($4.50–$5.48 *current rates as of April 9, 2015) per hour. Yeah, seriously. And, even if you had a previous professional background that SHOULD entitle you to continue working in this field or industry, you typically are required to have a certain level of Korean language skills or TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) and most companies require a TOPIK score or level of at least 3 or higher, which can be quite difficult and long to achieve. This is where you may have to make the decision to dedicate time to study, even with a scholarship. But, then again how are you supporting yourself financially in a country that can be expensive?
13. PATIENCE
Picture
Plain and simple; new county, new culture, language barrier, etc. you WILL need to have patience to get things done! PERIOD!
14. SUPPORT SYSTEM
Picture
Search out different organizations both in your home country and in Korea. This goes back again to DOING YOUR RESEARCH and I've tried to help out people, since even upon my first trip to Korea in October 2013, I had no idea that, number one; there were so many KADs living in Korea and two; that there are quite a few organizations. Here is the link I created and try to update as I can with INFORMATION LINKS FOR KOREAN ADOPTEES #KADS
15. PACKING
Picture
Once again if you are moving to Korea and planning to stay in a guest house or even rent your own apartment, the steretype or whatever you want to call it, space is small and limited, therefore be mindful of what you bring and also realize that Seoul is a MAJOR international city, therefore you can get many of the items you need and/or order them online.
In closing, I hope that these suggestions will raise questions and help you in either considering or in preparation of moving to Korea as KAD! Haejuseyo (해주세요)

(*TO THE RIGHT) There is a PDF that describes HOW and WHAT items are allowed to be sent to Korea as Care Packages, including packages can be sent to Eastern Social Welfare Society Agency in Seoul and picked up if you give them advance notice, but more than anything it describes the process and you can use the ESWS address in English as an example of how to fill out an address correctly for Seoul.

MY REFUSAL TO MAJOR IN DEBT

3/24/2015

Debt is a trap, especially student debt, which is enormous, far larger than credit card debt. It's a trap for the rest of your life because the laws are designed so that you can't get out of it. If a business, say, gets in too much debt, it can declare bankruptcy, but individuals can almost never be relieved of student debt through bankruptcy. – Noam Chomsky

Wednesday, March 24, 2015 (DAY 1,115)
When I think back to obtaining my Bachelor of Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Journalism and English Literature in 2006, I calculated that I spent more than $30,000 on my college education, and thankfully I only took a small student loan my junior or senior year, which I paid off the entire remaining balance of about $3,500 before leaving on my one-way global adventure. Therefore, even though I've been away from the United States for more than three-years–with the exception of a brief stint traveling from Central America to South East Asia via Los Angeles for a few days–I still try and keep up with what's going on in the news, and of course one topic that really surprised me was reading that student loan debt in the United States has now surpassed $1 trillion dollars, and the average student loan debt is close to $30,000 per individual! This, of course, made me feel extremely sad for those that may carry this financial ball and chain for not only the rest of their life, but will be passed down to other family members. There was a recent poll by the nonprofit American Consumer Credit Counseling (#ACCC) that found that an astounding 77% of those surveyed had an outstanding student debt of some amount, this is listed from the large infographic below. I wanted to share with others HOW I was able to avoid majoring in debt, and even though some of the things that I did may not be an option for you, it is something to consider before filling out that FAFSA or applying for student loans, from whatever financial institution they are being offered from. According to the Wall Street Journal the, "CFPB (from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) officials say student debt is rising for several reasons, including a surge in Americans going to college in recent years to escape the weak labor market. Also, tuition increases—which many colleges say are needed to offset big cuts in state funding—have many students taking out bigger loans."

Student Loan Infographic
Sadly, one thing I now consider–even thought I'm single–is the potential amount of debt I may incur in getting in to a future relationship. Also, the fact that 31% of individuals had to move back home with their parents in order to save money can be a very humbling experience.

According to the, "CFPB (via the Wall Street Journal article) officials say student debt is rising for several reasons, including a surge in Americans going to college in recent years to escape the weak labor market. Also, tuition increases—which many colleges say are needed to offset big cuts in state funding—have many students taking out bigger loans." Even though I was working full time while completing the entirety of my college degree, one area that encouraged me to complete it as quickly as possible was the fact that at the University of Colorado at Boulder the tuition was raising each semester for *general cost increases (whatever that exactly meant) by close to $500 or more, and when you are paying for your own tuition and textbooks, this can be a significant amount.
Picture
Two things that will save you money if you are someone that does not have a college trust fund, scholarships, grants, or basically anything where you will not need to repay monies, is:
1) Choose an in-state school to avoid out-of-state costs.
2) As much as you may want the so-called 'true college experience' by beginning at a four-year University, consider attending a local community college BUT only focus on the prerequisites that WILL typically transfer to a four-year University. I'll admit that I took an Intro to Architecture course that was 6-credits, a lot of work, expensive textbooks and materials and when I transferred to CU Boulder NONE of this was accepted. Therefore, it was a lesson learned of time and money wasted.
Picture
Picture
When you are ready to transfer to a four university make sure at least one semester if not an entire year before you are ready to transfer that you are already in direct contact with both your community college and university academic advisors to ensure that the courses you are taking or have taken will FULLY transfer! This again will save you an enormous amount of money. Both academic advisors from each institution knew me by name be cause I got to a point–in some ways–where I was on the verge of harassing them to ensure my transfer. The reason for this was, when I first made the trip out to the University of Colorado at Boulder in the spring and met with Steve Jones, the Associate Dean of Students and Curriculum Journalism, and I will never forget waiting in the hallway at the 'Armory Building' the old Journalism School and the door was slightly ajar and I happen to overhear a student ask about her excitement for graduating in a few short months, but then was told that after overlooking her overall credits that unfortunately there was a change in the requirements and since it was already past the midpoint of the Spring semester that she would actually NOT be graduating as expected that Spring! Horrified she was crying, naturally, and upset. THIS, THIS right here is the reason why I continue to insist that you practically harass your academic advisor of ANY new changes by meeting with them every semester, especially multiple times leading in to your senior year. This is not just limited to the University of Colorado at Boulder, but I have heard numerous horror stories from all institutions both public, private, Ivy League, graduate schools, etc. Therefore, do not just trust the information at the beginning of your higher education career, but be proactive and persistent! Changes often occur, and I suppose some universities expect the students to do their research about any changes to the requirements of their particular major. Even though I felt that I harassed both academic advisors from Front Range Community College (#FRCC) and the University of Colorado at Boulder (#CUBuffs), once I made the full transition to CU, I found out that there was one prerequisite that was newly required, which was a physics course.
Picture
Therefore, due to working full time, my options were limited when selecting from courses that would meet this requirement, and therefore I ended up having to take a Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8am Physics of Sound with about 500-plus students in a lecture auditorium that in all honest, kicked my ass! Along with everyone else. I made it a point to sit in a different seat in this giant auditorium style classroom, and each time I would ask people around me if they had any idea what was going on, and EVERY person said absolutely not! I don't think I've ever seen a group of 500-plus individuals that always looked terrified and were taking notes as fast as they could! We had our entire class for lectures with the professor on Mondays and Wednesdays, and due to the enormous class size on Fridays (for myself and about 20-30 others) we had recitation class, which, "basically, recitation classes are for courses with a large class size or complicated material (like math or science). Usually these classes will have 1 professor and several student teachers. The professor will teach the large class (also called the Lecture) and cover new material. The student teachers will teach the recitation classes and go over the week's material in more detail. Because there is often a lot of material to cover in the large class, there isn't a lot of time to go over specifics or answer questions. The recitation class gives you the opportunity to address any questions or issues in a smaller classroom environment. Also, quizzes and homework are frequently given &/or collected during the recitation class," via Yahoo answers.

Picture
In conclusion, really evaluate carefully by FULLY understanding student loans before utilizing them for paying for your University degree. This also applies to those that are considering Graduate School, such as MBA programs and more. Don't get me wrong, I still am a strong believer in achieving your bachelor's degree and more, however, it should be considered very carefully HOW you are going to financially afford it. Once again, my life has been quite unique and one such way I was able to pay for my higher education was not only working full time in broadcast television, BUT, surprisingly I purchased a home at the very young age of 20 back in 2002, which was a four-bedroom three-bathroom home where I had roommates pretty much during my entire college career, which took me six-years to complete, which I can't help but quote from one of my favorite movies, "You know a lot of people go to college for seven years. I know, they're called doctors." If you know the movie you're already a superhero in my book! Well, going back to purchasing a home prior to the 2008 housing crash and global recession, this allowed me to have roommates that helped me to save about ever six-months, where I then got to write out a $6,000-plus check to the University for a semester of tuition! Fun, right? Well, in conclusion, be AWARE and DO YOUR RESEARCH when consider your school you attend, by asking things such as;
1) How you are going to pay for it?
2) What will you do you if don't complete your degree?
3) Is your degree field a viable financial option upon completing your degree when considering paying back the student loans?

I'VE GOT SEOUL BABY

If you want something you've never had, then you've got to do something you've never done. - Author Unknown

Picture
Wednesday, October 16, 2013 (DAY 590)
After confusion with my flight with one of the cheapest and worst rated airlines– China Eastern Air–I am finally on my way back to the homeland of my birthplace Seoul, South Korea. The tumultuous search for locating my birth parents began more than two years ago after being referred by another Korean adoptee, Melissa, who introduced me to, Dillion International, the organization that helped reunite her with her birth mother after her own five-year long search. She was a great help and source of encouragement for all of the information she shared with me regarding the emotions and feelings that only another Korean adoptee can relate too, because growing up you experience all sorts of difficulties that you often keep to yourself because you feel as though others cannot understand nor relate regardless of the circumstances unfortunately. Everything from the racial slurs as a child in school to feelings of inadequacy because of your mixed ethnicity and cultural identity–you never quite truly feel American nor Korean, but there is the feeling as though you are almost rejected by both cultures. I know that times have changed and I was extremely fortunate enough to grow up with a wonderful family with two other Korean adopted sisters, as well with my extended family that never once treated any of us any different and for that I am and will always be thankful to every single one of them for that. Also, I cannot thank my caseworker, Jan Dunn, the Director of the search program based out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, for all of the long hours, phone calls, and emails that she put in that has got me to the point of today. There are many things that I can say about being a Korean adoptee to a family in the United States, since this was the specific request from my birth mother at the time I was placed with Eastern Social Welfare Services in Seoul, but I will save that for a later entry as I have yet to even step foot in South Korea.

Picture
Returning back to my horrendously exhausting 14-hour long day and evening that was spent in Suvarnabhumi International Airport or better known as BKK, since the next available flight China Eastern could get me on did not depart until 1:55am. I had debated whether I should take the train back in to the city since it was only a 30-minute trip one-way, but since I had my large backpack I decided to just wait it out wandering around the ticketing terminal, because thankfully they offer free carts for passengers, unlike many airports in the States. Going through bouts of sitting, walking the different levels, and talking with a few other travelers time was passing at the pace of a Colorado State Graduate adding double digits together. Yes, you heard me correctly. Go Buffs! Even sleep deprived and exhausted my sense of humor has yet to fail me, even in my writing. Finally, at 11pm the check-in counter for China Eastern Air begins to light up, even though it is clearly posted that the official check-in counter opens at 11:25pm, but already there is a line forming and I guess that there are at least 40 people already in front of me, and another 80 or more behind me. Ticket in hand I head to the Thai immigration where I am a bit nervous since my tourist visa had expired now by two full days and the repercussion of such an offense is a 500 THB ($16.11) fee for every day that you are over. Southeast Asia is known for their strict behavior when it comes to issues such as these and technically they could have charged me, but when they questioned it and I explained that since we are at an airport and there was confusion with bumping my flight I was all set to depart your country on the expected date and this would not have been an issue. Fortunately, he was understanding gave me my exit stamp and I was off to clear security and find something to eat before the four-hour flight to Shanghai. Once we boarded the plane, in typical Bangkok fashion, a torrential downpour accompanied by a massive lightning storm ensued and we found ourselves waiting on the tarmac for nearly 90-minutes. I began to get a little nervous since I knew I only had a two-hour window to transfer flights in Shanghai (PVG) and since I had never been to this airport, let alone China, I didn’t know what to expect. By the time we landed and the fasten seat belt light was turned off, I checked the time and I should have been boarding my flight to Seoul at that exact moment! Sprinting past passengers after disembarking the plane I didn’t realize I would have to clear a Chinese security checkpoint even though I was not leaving this specific terminal but in transit with the same airline. Thankfully this was done quickly and I made it just in time to jump on the bus that shuttles you across the tarmac to where your flight awaits you. This was very interesting since it was a ten-minute ride on a crowded bus without any seats as we passed large planes that were being taxied to runways. Talk about a one-sided traffic accident if this were to ever occur. Since I was in such a rush I hadn’t noticed that the air was crisp and cool, a large difference from the sweltering sweatbox of Bangkok, and this made me smile as it reminded me of Colorado autumns.

Too excited to sleep and having the luxury of a window seat, I watched as we passed several islands before our approach in to Incheon International Airport, which for seven years in a row (2005–2012), it was rated the best airport worldwide by the Airports Council International. I landed just after 12:30pm local time. Since I had already made plans to CouchSurf with Adam, a Canadian English teacher that has been living in Seoul for the past eight-years, and he wouldn’t be off work until after 6:45pm I knew I had plenty of time to kill. Having excellent directions from Adam of how to get to his neighborhood in the city, I hopped on the subway and only had one transfer to make. The 90-minute ride was so comfortable that through my lack of sleep in the past 48 or more hours I fell asleep and awoke only one station past where I was supposed to transfer. Whew, that was close. Since it was still early afternoon as I walked outside of the Noksapyeong subway station I found a small local coffee shop called, Chansbros, to drop my bag and relax with some much needed caffeine. Since I was loitering for hours at this incredibly relaxing spot I began talking with the owner, Chan and his wife. They obviously saw my backpack and began asking me questions and after telling them that not only had I been backpacking for almost 20 months, but was specifically in South Korea to be reunited with my birth mom for the first time they were very excited for me and I knew that I had already made my first set of new local friends. Since they had lived in a variety of States in the U.S. their English was impeccable and we talked in to the evening.

Before I knew it, right on schedule, Adam showed up just after 7pm. After telling Chan and his wife goodbye and that I was sure I would see them again tomorrow, Adam had already picked up one of my backpacks and we headed out in the slight cold for the ten-minute walk to his apartment. On the walk we exchanged a bit about one another, which I know for many people outside of the CS community seems odd, since we literally just met in-person less than five-minutes before and are learning about one another as I’m staying at his place for the next few nights. I’ve found that trust is a trait I’d rather continue to value rather than one of being skeptical and full of doubt.

Picture
On the way to his place he asked if I was hungry, which of course I was, and he told me that a group of friends were meeting at a restaurant where I could get my first experience of authentic Korean BBQ. How to explain it? Well it’s pretty much like eating rainbows it was so delicious. Just examine the photo because words can’t express how unbelievable it tasted. Our gluttonous group consisted of Tracy, an English teacher from Kansas and her Korean boyfriend JKwon as well as Matt, who surprise surprise is also an English teacher that is a self-proclaimed army brat that told me he really didn’t have a place he considered to be home in the States. Returning back to Adam’s apartment around 10:30pm, I hit his couch and within seconds I was fast asleep. In all honesty, I was surprised I had made it through dinner without falling asleep face first into the center grill, but all in all it was a great first day in Seoul.

PERCEPTION OF REALITY

After a lifetime of world travel I’ve been fascinated that those in the third world don’t have the same perception of reality that we do. – Jim Harrison

Monday, June 4, 2012 (DAYS 92 & 93)
After only one day in the colonial town of Leon, and the consensus to depart for the nearest beach town of Las Penitas is a unanimous family decision. Packing up for the short 20-minute ride continues to be an ordeal as I attempt to squeeze, smash, and stuff items in every available free space in my bag. I’m convinced that whenever this great might journey end, under the special skills section of a job application or my resume I will have to include ninja-like packing abilities. You want a watermelon to fit neatly in your fanny pack? Not a problem, let’s also add three tied off plastic bags of juice, a live chicken, and a basket of banana bread. The things I continue to experience in these third world countries is both an eye-opening education and a humbling way of life that carries an entirely different perception in the appreciation of things. I am truly grateful for the life I have lead thus far, and am even more excited for where life will take me in the daily adventure that is free from the cookie-cutter mold of routinely living an existence of the social norm. Living out of a backpack to some would be the epitome of hitting rock bottom in life, but I’ve realized that it is more freeing to live with less to experience more. Stacking the last of our bags near the front reception area, Cam and I begin a game of pool while waiting for the shuttle and I can’t help but think what a great Monday morning this is turning out to be.

Picture
The short drive to the remote beach town in our fashionable shuttle that boasts air conditioning is actually hot recycled air being circulated in our faces from the vents just above our heads, and already each of my legs are stuck to the person on both my right and left. Thoughts of jumping in the ocean sustain me from instigating a Vancouver style riot against the heat and playing DJ with my iPod helps calm the current situation, otherwise I might have gone medieval on our driver. Sitting in the crowded backseat, I am reminded of home as thoughts turn to Jamie Bachicha and Julie Brizard, as I play a mix of music from one of my notorious playlists that is known the world over, or at least in Denver, Colorado. The legendary late night dance offs at my place that almost always ended with people dancing on my coffee table is a fond memory that still makes me smile, even while riding through dirt roads in Nicaragua. The first time I met Jamie and Julie was at the big red castle of an undisclosed location in Westminster, where debates over midget tossing and extensive, highly intellectual conversations on the subject of burnt da burnt were a calling card that will forever unite us a Belleview Bandits. I will be forever grateful for the numerous times I was pulled out of class by these two troublemakers with surprised unscheduled doctor’s appointment that ended with adventures around the Mile High City, often ending with late night trips to the oldest coffee shop in the city, Paris on the Platte. I suppose I can openly admit this now, especially since detention is no longer a threat that can be held over our heads. Viva los amigos!

Picture
After visiting every hostel in the quiet surf town of Las Penitas, we decide upon the cheapest of the three, Playa Roca. The view is absolutely incredible. I have never stayed at a place that is closer to the shore, and after settling in to our dorm room, which sleeps exactly six; we enjoy the afternoon view from the upstairs balcony overlooking the Pacific. The arrival of high tide sends large crashing waves in to the poorly built retaining wall below us that consists of 100lb sandbags that are being tossed like pennies and we cannot help but stare speechless at the continual pounding waves. Growing up in one of the farthest locations from any beach, I am consistently spellbound by the endless horizon of the ocean where the two-tones of blues collide in perfect harmony.

Picture
The rest of the afternoon is spent swimming in the surf at the southern end of the beach, where a split in the sand fills a large lagoon and I am slightly reminded of the similar landscape of Caye Caulker. The powerful surf hurls us around the crescent shaped opening of a natural lazy river that Water World would have a hard time emulating with such a strong current. Walking the beach in the soft sand, we arrive back in front of our hostel in time for some ultimate frisby with some local kids. Clearly dominating the game, just as the mighty University of Colorado Buffaloes tend to bend over and ferociously spank the weak and pathetic Colorado State Rams, bloodshed is avoided in the victorious win of the small Nicaraguans. As the sun begins to set, there is a gathering of storm clouds forming overhead that is causing even the locals to wait with anticipation of the developing storm.

Picture
Just before the sun completely vanishes for the night, a series of wicked lightening storms begin, providing our entertainment for the night as we have front row seats just under the protection of the grass roof above us. Each of us quickly scramble, grabbing our cameras and begin snapping away at the darkened sky that is lit up momentarily with bursts of light.  The show does not disappoint, and as night settles in with completely darkened skies, the vivid images of daytime that last for just seconds is more spectacular than watching a squirrel waterskiing. Ok, maybe not, but it was pretty incredible to witness and will be a memory of Nicaragua that I will always share with my current traveling amigos.

Picture
Tuesday brings a repeat of the previous day with the exception of watching the transit of Venus across the sun. Meeting Sojin, a New Yorker doing some volunteer work in the country, he graciously gives our group a pair of Solar Glasses to safely view the event that will not take place for another 105 years. Walking over to both John Wayne and Cameron, I tell them that they can stop staring directly at the sun with wide-open eyes, because we have proper scientific eye protection of the highest caliber. Passing around the cardboard glasses with plastic lenses, you would think it was a nerdfest on the beach with all of us fighting over the shiny new toy that resembled something that might have come out of Michael Vick’s house. Forty-two policia, nine military, and twenty-eight minutes later, and order has been restored on the beach. The unspoken even that will forever be known as the Venus Massacre of Nicaragua 2012, is now a closed chapter. Rest in peace Michelle’s dignity. Please note, the photo of tranquility is taken just moments before what can only be described as EVERYONE needing an adult.
